“Relaxation & Romance at Braco”

This was our 2nd trip to Grand Lido Braco, and it was as romantic and beautiful as ever. Check in was smooth and we were greeted by a cool towel and rum punch (or whatever else you wanted to drink). Our room wasn’t ready because we arrived before check-in time but this time we were prepared with our sun outfits (we actually changed at the airport)…So it was no problem mon! After eating delicious jerk chicken sandwiches from the Reggae Café, we went straight to the Au Natural Beach for some sun. We kept laughing that we didn’t really need our luggage. :-)

All I can say is that the beach really is beautiful, and it was great to be on the Au Natural side. We are definitely “beach people” and just love chilling out at the beach, watching waves and listening to the ocean. Before we knew it, the beach waitress came by with a whole tray of different drinks for us to choose from. So we dived right into some “dirty bananas”.

This was our first time visiting Braco with a “group” and although we did not know any of the people, they all were very nice and friendly. While we love spending lots of romantic time together on vacation, we also enjoy seeing the evening entertainment shows and partying at night. We believe that going with a group was a good decision especially since the agency, All the Way Travel, had great rates (much cheaper than we paid the previous year). They took care of all the room arrangements and the people were nice. This was the first time we had ever used All the Way Travel, and I would highly recommend them.

As far as accommodations, we opted for the 1 bedroom Au Natural room (3rd Floor). The rooms on the A/N side have new bathrooms and have the most amazing view of the ocean. The furniture shows a little wear but overall, the rooms are very clean and spacious. Again, the view from the bed and balcony is just incredible. We could lie in bed and look right at the ocean (very romantic!). I could just sit on that balcony forever and look and listen to the ocean. It makes for a very relaxing and romantic happy hour.

The food at all of the restaurants was excellent, much better than our last visit. We dined at all the restaurants (i.e. French, Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi, Victoria’s Market, Italian, etc.). This was the 1st time we ever ate sushi and the sushi chef was amazing. I would highly recommend trying the sushi if you have never tried it. The chef seemed very knowledgeable and was so nice at helping sushi “newbies” make selections.

As far as service, I cannot say enough about how outstanding the service was during our visit. It seemed as though as soon as you had an empty glass, someone was right there with a new drink or asking you if you needed anything. Jason, at the Reggae Café, was terrific and was always right there with whatever you needed. The bartenders at the A/N bar and clubhouse were great! Room service was always timely!

My husband and I attended the entertainment shows every night and were very pleased. We thought the entertainment was much better than last year. It was fun just to let loose and dance to the music of whatever was playing that night. We also saw a terrific Jamaican dance troupe, a fire eater and even Elvis was in the building on our last night! It was funny to see Elvis in Jamaica but it reminded us of our honeymoon in Vegas…so we loved it! :-) We also loved dressing up for the group party, fantasy night, the toga party and the PJ party. It is so fun to let go of reality for a week and just dance and have fun.

If you go to GLB, you really should take in some spa treatments. My husband and I had 3 couple massages on the beach and each one was amazing. If you are thinking of a massage, I would highly recommend doing it on the beach. I have never been so relaxed in my life! Soletta is the best masseuse ever!

As far as day trips, we did 2 trips by ourselves. The first trip was to Nine Mile, which is the birth place and mausoleum of Bob Marley. If you are a Bob Marley fan, I would recommend the trip. The concierge arranged for a private driver, Daniel, who was very nice. It is important to note that the ride to Nine Mile is long, windy and bumpy (so take your Dramamine) but we thought it was very interesting to see this historic place/museum. The tour guides were very informative and we learned a lot about Bob Marley, his family, his music and his historic influence. During this trip, you’ll also get a feel for the Jamaican countryside and farming.

Our second trip was to the Great House at Rose Hall. This is a shorter trip (about 45 minutes from Braco). The restored house is very beautiful and the tour gives you a small insight into the horrors of slavery. You also learn about what it was like to live in the 1800s and about Jamaica’s history. The mansion is supposedly haunted but luckily we did not see any ghosts on our tour! :-) After a stop at the Rose Hall shops, we were quickly back to paradise at Braco.

If you decide to stay at GLB, I would highly recommend that you check out the Au Natural side of the resort (even if you never think you could never go nude). My husband and I had never gone to a nude beach/pool until last year (at GLB), and after about a day of shyness at the beach, we were so happy that we tried it. This year, it just seemed so natural (and sensual at times), and it was really a great experience. The A/N pool area offers many activities throughout the day. There seemed to be a lot of fun going on there during the daytime. As I mentioned, my husband and I really enjoy the beach so we mostly enjoyed the privacy and romance of the beach. The hot tub on the A/N side is always great day or night. We experienced hot tub temperature problems only a few times and they pretty much fixed it both times. Because of the romance factor, I think this resort (especially the A/N side) is better suited to couples rather than singles.

As far as any negatives, I guess the only negatives would be the typical comment about the sheets not fitting exactly right. But from what I can tell from my husband, who travels often, he said the sheets at many hotels are often just like that. Not sure why they aren’t fitted. Also, the beach lounges could use some updating. But honestly, even when we couldn’t find a newer lounge, I really didn’t care because the beach and water was so beautiful. We just dragged a cushion onto the beach and I laid on that. Other than that, there really were no negatives. It was so hard to get bothered about anything when we were so relaxed.

Lastly, we wanted to mention that during our stay, we met so many hardworking staff members. (I wish I could remember all their names!) At the A/N clubhouse, we met great bartenders, Shericka and Nigel. Both were as nice as could be throughout our stay and kept the champagne flowing! We also had a great conversation with Raymond who was really nice as well. Nordia, the concierge, was terrific, as always, and helped us make all the arrangements for our trips and reservations for dinner and spa. There were just so many people who went out of their way to make our vacation an enjoyable experience and we are very grateful.

We went ot the GLB on a vacation with our local radio station. My husband and I had the best time! The resort was clean, the staff was super nice!

We arrived on Saturday, January the 19th, upon arriving we were greated with cold towels and rum punch. We went to our room Immediately . Our room was clean. We had an amazing shower (it was a spa shower), our room was made up daily and we were even offered a turn down service nightly.

The night life was a blast with the disco and karaoke and other shows they put on. It was nice to dress up and go out and not have to worry about driving home.

The staff was wonderful. Each bartender had a special recipe drink coctail that they would come up with if we were indecisive on what to drink. I recommend the dirty banana for a frozen drink or the hummingbird for a refreshing rum drink. They also had red stripe beer and all other top notch liquor.

The food was very good and there was plenty of it.

The facility was clean, the pool cold but clean, the beach was cleaned daily. I have never had so much fun! My only regret was not staying longer.

I will go back that is for sure!

“Total Decadence in Jamaica”

Grand Lido Braco Resort & Spa

We spent this past Christmas at the Grand Lido Braco Resort in Runaway Bay, Jamaica. It was a vacation of a lifetime. The people were so warm and friendly and they couldn't do enough to make our vacation the best ever. The food was fabulous; the spa services were wonderful; the atmosphere was terrific; the gardens were lush with beautiful tropical flowers and bushes. I would highly recommend Grand Lido Braco to couples wanting to get away from it all and indulge.

“Did not meet our expectations.”

My wife and I went to the GLB with a large group (about 100) from Jan 5 to 12, 2008.

We went to many all-inclusive resort but it was our first time in Jamaica. We stayed on the textile side of the resort and we were lucky enough to get a beach front room.

My review is personal but while I was there I talked with the rest of the group and we mostly shared the same opinion.

SHUTTLE FROM THE AIRPORT: The driver almost grab the luggage from our hands to get it to the bus and had no shame to tell us that we must give them a tips. I have no problem tipping but it is bothering when it is ask in such an impolite manner. We also witness some "illegal transaction" as soon as we got in the bus but since I do not use drugs this did not cost me anything ! The ride to GLB is about 45 minutes.

CHECK-IN: Very efficient. They took charge of our luggage as soon as we came in and they gave us our key since our room was already ready. We had no trouble finding our room and we got our luggage very quickly.

ROOM: The room was correct. Is was always kept very clean and they change your towels as needed. There is a mini-fridge that is refill every day (except one where they refilled the water but not the soft drinks). We had an ocean view and we really appreciated it. The TV reception was not so good and the sound was really bad on about half the channels. A/C was working very well.

BEACH: This is the really bad part of this resort. We heard that the "au natural" beach is beautiful but we were on the textile side and the beach was really really bad. The first few days it had piles of debris and the section in front of the rooms really smelled bad. We saw the employee work everyday to clean the beach but there effort was not enough. There are a lots of rocks and I would not even risk myself to play beach volleyball barefoot because you hurt your feet just walking on the beach. The beach was a little better on the last few days but even then you cannot go far in the ocean before you encounter rocks, shells, sea urshin and other dangerous thing at the bottom. I went to resort that were a lot less expensive and we found a much better beach there. However I must say that we never had any trouble getting towels and chairs at the beach.

POOL: COLD ! The pool is very beautiful and it is kept very very clean. The guy that clean the pool does a great job considering the number of tree leaves falling in it all day long. We use the pool mostly to play pool volleyball since it was too cold to just relax in it and enjoy it.

JACUZZI: THIS WAS A REAL JOKE... The jacuzzi at the end of the beach near the bar was working (bubbles) but it was freezing cold, and the one near the pool was hot but not working (no bubbles) making it a disgusting hot water bath. Both issue were reported to management multiple time but neither of them was fix while we were there.

RESTAURANTS: We tried every place on the site and in general the food is really good. The buffet that is serve for breakfast and lunch at the Victorian Market is correct. You will find a limited selection but everything is good and hot enough. For lunch you can also go to the "Reggae Cafe" where you will find soup, sandwich and the best meal of all, the jerk chicken. We loved to go there for lunch because the jerk chicken is so good and you can always go to the buffet for desert afterward. For dinner you have many option. The Vic Market and the "Pasta" Italian restaurant offer a la carte and you don't need a reservation for them. The food is correct at both places but we found that the Italian restaurant is not consistent since we loved the pasta there some days but 2 days later the same selection wasn't really good. You can also dine at two other restaurants that need reservation (make those as fast as you can because they fill in fast). The French Restaurant was disappointing. They require a jacket but they will lend you if you don't have one. They are really taking them self seriously and the food is not better that what you find elsewhere. It is also very dark so if you want to see what you eat it is not the best place to go. We thought that the personnel there should remove the stick they have up their a... and be more friendly with the guess. The white gloves and the long face did not make our meal more enjoyable. The is also the Japanese restaurant that offer the "show" at a heating table, or the sushi bar. The "table show" is really expeditive so if you are the first seating you will feel the pressure to get out of there quickly, but the meal was great and everything was very good. We also tried the sushi bar even if we are not amateurs and we were pleasantly surprise. The presentation was great and the food was fresh and very good too. Finally there is a bar/grill at the end of the beach that is opened 24/7 and you can get a good selection of food there too. The menu at the grill is the same as the one you can use to order at the room. We did not experience room service but we tried a lot of thing at the grill (burgers, nachos, lamb, wings, pizza). The pizza and burger are less than average but the other selections are good. You can also ask for a Champagne bottle directly at this bar. We enjoyed getting a bottle of champagne and nachos late at night and go to our patio to enjoy it.

ENTERTAINMENT/ACTIVITIES: Less than we expected. They sell this resort saying there is a lot of thing to do but there are a lot of deception when you get there. There are themed night but the participation is very low since is it not everybody that like to go to a disco in PJ or in toga. We saw the band only one night and it quit really fast. There were a lot of activities that started late or did not occurred at all. For example on Casino Night the table were installed around 7:00PM but there were no dealer to be found until 8:15PM... A lot of people were waiting to play and then 1 dealer came to one table and we played for about 15 minutes before he ask us to leave our seat so other could play (i.e. the player that took place around the other tables hoping to get a dealer!). Another example was the "billard tournament" where no staff was to be seen. We had a "pool volleyball" tournament because we took charge and invited players to come because if we did not this activity too would not have occurred. The staff also claimed that the sea was too rough 5 out of 7 days as an excuse to not take out the boats for snorkeling or scuba diving. The sea was not so bad. One day they took out the boat in the morning but we could not go for snorkeling in the afternoon because they claimed there was too much wind... We suspected it was more because we were few people to have sign in and they did not want the trouble to do it for few people. One last note, Karl the entertainment supervisor is rude and we felt he did a really bad job. But there is one thing that was a success and this was the beach party. We suffered a power failures (all Jamaica) that night but since they were already prepared for the beach party (food, tables, candles, etc...) we had a great time having dinner directly on the beach. The show was so-so but we liked the experience anyway. My wife also took advantage of the complimentary manicure/pedicure (with reservation) and liked it.

TENNIS: Two courts are available with balls and rackets that are not so bad.

EXCURSIONS: We book two excursions with the concierge. The first one was to go to the Dunn's River Fall and it cost 42$/pers. Be aware because they will try to sell it to you for 50$/pers. They tried it with us but when we pointed out that it was specified 42$ in the brochure right on their desk they charged us 42$ without saying anything (no excuse), and they did sell it for 50$ to many others that were in our group! This excursion is great. You take a cab and it takes about 40 minutes to get there then it takes between 1 hours and 1.5 hours to do the activity depending of the crowd there. When we went it was really crowded because there was a cruise ship group that was at the port this particular day but it was a lot of fun anyway. If you can book a day when there is no cruise ship around it would be better. You can bring your camera and the guide will transport it for you but be prepare to tip to get it back. The climbing of the falls is relatively easy and the rocks are not slippery but do not go barefoot since there are small pebbles that would hurt your feet. You can also rent water-shoes on-site if you don't have appropriate foot ware. We also book another excursion, the "Luminous Lagoon". BEWARE... THIS IS A TOURIST TRAP. We were lucky enough to book a couple of days in advance so we were able to cancel easily when we meet the part of your group that went there the first night. We had a good idea of the value of this excursion when we heard them sing "IF YOU THINK YOU JUST GOT SCREWED CLAP YOUR HAND!" while they were getting out of the bus !!! There were 34 peoples of our group that went that first night and they all (no exception) thought that it was a scam. They saw nothing so luminous there and the water was just too disgusting to get in. A few tried to swim in it but they said the bottom was like a mix of mud and garbage. Some of them were lucky enough to have book this excursion using our travel agent so after complaining, the travel agency accepted to give them back 50% of what they paid.

BAR: Good selection, variable service. Try the "Hummingbird". Champagne available to the bar at the end of the beach.

SHOPS: The shops on the main street are very expensive but there are some item that you will only find there if your not planning to go outside the resort (like Jerk Spices). But there were beach vendor that install tables of items near the pool almost every day. You can find some nice souvenirs there but you must bargain a lot to have a good deal.

CHECK-OUT: Everything went smoothly.

So I would definitely not rate this resort as a 5 stars, 3 stars at most. The food and service was good but not exceptional, the entertainment and activities were bellow average and the beach was just not up to our expectation.

I am going to become an official promoter of Sandals. I am guessing these guys see each other competition but there is truly no comparison. I was very objective going. I knew how much I enjoeyed my trip to Sandals in the summer and decided to give another hotel a chance. Probably won't do that again. My christmas & new years was not bad (I was in Jamaica, how bad could it be?)

We stayed in runaway bay (not a very good location at all. I would almost say it is in the middle of nowhere. My main issue was the rooms. They were pretty small and the decor was from the 80's.
I also was not please with the food which was fine because Sandals food was not amazing either. I guess with my wife and I it is more the small things, not being able to get a drink when you ask for one, being ignored when sitting for dinner etc.

It is only an opinion but I was not impressed at all.

Regards,
DS
