White Sands Negril

The white sands negril is not a 5* hotel and nor does it profess to be one.
Me and my boyfriend decided to take a 2 weeks break in Jamaica and chose Negril. We looked through a large number of hotels in Negril and picked the white sands because of the price (I'm not going to lie, we're in our early 20's and do EVERYTHING on a tight budget).

We booked our own transfer from the airport to the hotel for a very reasonable price using clives airport transfers in a very large, very clean, very WELL air conditioned pepole carrier and had a great coversation with a very knowledgable driver. We got to the hotel at 9pm, 2 hours after the reception closes. The manager had kept the front desk open especially for us so we could check in, I thought this was a nice personal touch. We found we had been upgraded free of charge to a delux beach side room from a standard one again, this was great and was totally unexpected. Our bags were taken for us to our room which was VERY spacious. The room had a double bed and one single bed, a balcony with table and 2 chairs a fridge and a shower room.

The decor in the room wasn't very modern, it reminded me of the types of places I used to stay in florida in the early 90's however, I was not concerned by this at all as the room was clean and well maintained. Our room was cleaned every day and the bed sheets were changed along with our towels (they were a bit crispy but that's a personal thing). The air con in the room is NOT heavy duty, but even coming from the cold shores of england where we are not used to hot weather, the room fan was adequate and if it was too hot we put on the air con for a little bit.
The hotel has no TV's in any of the rooms and no phone, if you want to make a phone call you have to go to reception to buy a phone card and make calls from their phones. The lack of TV was a bit daunting but we took a laptop so we could watch series and films, we were very happy when we realised we could pick up wireless from some of the surrounding hotels and use the internet from the comfort of our own room.
All in all the rooms are basic, but with the price you pay you can't really expect much more. The rooms are always cleaned to a high standard and the maids are really friendly.

There is a bar down at the beach, they do great drinks and good drinks offers, however I would say to give the bar food a miss, it's quite expencive and takes FOREVER. Me and my boyfriend waited an hour and a half once for an order of pancakes, it took them 30 minutes to bring 2 pepsi's (I must stress there was only one person working on the food side of the bar that day) and when the pancakes arrived they were inedible (burnt to a crisp!). After that we did not eat at the hotel, but that doesn't matter because there are SO many great places to eat in negril that cost next to nothing.

The beach was amazing, right in the centre of the 7 mile stretch. Generally, if you turn left as you go out of the hotel you are walking on a stretch of beach where there are LOTS and LOTS of people with stalls, all wanting to sell you their wares. This can be quite annoying but if you stop a few times and talk to them they get to know you over the course of the holiday and gradually leave you alone (advice, if they ask you if this is your 1st time in jamaica, say no and act like you know this place like the back of your hand!) if they try to get you to put things on, say no. Don't buy anything you don't want to and don't feel pressured. If you like something, haggle, start unreasonably low to get yourself a good deal. Also don't feel like you have to go with someone who has stopped you on the beach if they want to take you to a bar/cafe or shop, just politely tell them you have somewhere else to be or something to do and they will leave you alone.
People do try and sell you drugs (namely weed and cocaine) but if you say no, thanks, you're not into that kind of thing and carry on walking they get the message and leave you alone.
If you turn right and walk down that way, you walk toward more of the all inclusive resorts, because these are patrolled by their own security they have NO beach sellers on them.

All in all white sands is great if you're looking for a cheap holiday and are not too fussed about your accomodation. The staff are great and really friendly (except for one woman in reception, you can't MISS her) its in a great location in the middle of the 7 mile beach, the weather was amazing and the locals were friendly (sometimes a little pushy but they're only trying to make a living) the sea was something else and the local and hotel restraunts are good value for money (the portion sizes are SO big me and my bf usually had only starters and were too full to carry on with the meal or we shared one entree between the 2 of us)

White Sands Negril

I arrived at White Sands on a hot afternoon and was made feel very welcome and comfortable by the staff in the front office. I had many questions that they were happy to answer. My room was on the garden side with a kitchen and full fridge. (I was happy to be on the garden side as opposed to the beach as it is quieter) I was delighted to find a Humming Birds nest in the Hybiscus tree growing outside my patio - it was so peaceful to sit there and drink my coffee in the morning and watch the mother bird and others go about their morning rituals.
The A/C was fabulous as it cooled the room down quickly each time I returned. The staff were so accommodating and pleasant. My room was cleaned every day and I had a full bath as well as a shower in my bathroom. Hot and cold water pressure was powerful. (Very important to me!)
I did not have a TV in my room - for which I was thankful - as I spent many hours relaxing and keeping myself busy without the constant "noise attack" that I normally subject myself to! Over all - I just loved my stay ......... wish I was there now ! :)

“The truth about this place!!!”

White Sands Negril

Ok, i Seriously do not know where to start!!! Let me first start with before we even arrived. Two days before we were leaving, we went from May 28th till June 1st, we called the hotel because on their website we read that they would provide pick up from the airport for you. So we called to set it up, well the women at the front desk said they don't do that and that we'll have to get it from the airport. So that was that, lie number one. But apparently they pick up other people, but for us, they didnt have the service, well anyway, we got to the airport got our 90 cab ride and drove for 1 and a half hours to get to the resort. I'm gonna make a long story short. The hotel is a mess, I'm sorry people, before going on this vacation, my boyfriend and I were like reading all these reviews and we said to each other, o who cares these people are over exaggerating we just wanna go and get away its just a room to sleep in, whatever, we were going with an open mind, and expecting the least. Well I didn't know there was anything lower than the least, because thats what this place is. The hotel is a mess, their website lies, we met multiple people there who were not happy. The rooms were fine, beds fine, bathroom was ok, but shower was like a trickling waterfall, and I'm not just saying it to be funny, it seriously was the worst showering conditions ever. I never experienced anything like it.
While we were there, we also had no power for two days, two days!!!!!! no lights, no air conditioning !!!!! it was not a day and a half it was two days of this!! We tried to find out what was going on and they said they were working on it, so they gave us candles, long white candles like u get at a church, with matches and that was our source of light. Now I am from New Jersey and I love it cold, when I go to sleep i want it cold and with the no air thing was not acceptable. But what can they do, they were working on it right. We werent compensated or anything, they really didnt care, and no one made a big fuss about it accept like us and maybe a few other people, but it didnt matter. The only thing that was beautiful was the beach. But that was ruined by all the vendors and particularly one that calls himself DMX he sells bracelets, he never left me alone and harrassed me everyday i was there. telling me because i wont buy his bracelets he's starving. I tried relaxing my last day there and he wouldnt leave me alone, i finally said to him i want to be left alone sternly and he still didnt, i gave up, i give up on jamaica, ive been here before 6 years ago I stood at the starfish, and huge resort and enjoyed it for the most part. Wanted to come back to Jamaica, go to negril, but it just showed my why i will never go back there. Its full of drugs and illegal activity and we honestly did not feel safe at times. I am serious people, I have been to a lot of places and I never experienced anything like I did here at White Sands and Negril. My boyfriend himself said he stood at hostels that were nicer. Listen, I know by reading this you are going to try and give the white sands the benefit of doubt, but you need to think to yourself, are you ready! and just know that you have been warned!! Stay somewhere else, at a place that actually has power all the time, cuz yes we were the only hotel that didnt have power. I can go on and on, this place just upset me and I just wanted to let everyone know and let future travels know what they are in for. stay away

“Perfect for what we needed”

White Sands Negril

4 of 5 stars
New York
Jun 11, 2008

My fiancee and I are hard-working New Yorkers who simply needed a few days away for little money. This was the perfect spot. Negril was not a far drive and we had pre-arranged a car to pick us up. We arrived without luggage as Air Jamaica had forgot to load our entire flight's bags. The people at White Sands were so nice. Luckily it was jamaica and all we needed were a toothbrush and a bathing suit - both easy to find. Once the bags arrived EVERYONE at white sands knew to alert us. I felt like they truly cared.

The room was moderate but it had a little porch, clean bedding and A/C. The only funny part was that there were 2 twin beds pushed together. Often we felt we were sleeping far away - not exactly romantic.

The bar is great. The beach phenomenal. We met so many great travel friends. If you need more glamour you can get in a cab and head to a bigger resort or a special dinner at rockhouse. I would go back for another cheap 5 day vacation and certainly stay there again. We ate breakfast at CocoLaPalm for a change of morning scenery and strong coffee. It was a short walk down the beach.

Drinks were strong. Sunsets amazing.

“Good Times”

White Sands Negril

4 of 5 stars
Evergreen park
Jun 11, 2008

We had a fantastic ten days at the White Sands Hotel. This is our second trip to White Sands and we will return again. As the staff members put it we are not just friends but family. Thanks to Francis, Sonia, Judy, Horace, Jennifer, Henry, Paul and Tony for making our vacation a great experience. We do not go to Jamaica to be pampered but want to experience Jamaica’s real treasure, her people. If you make an effort to get to know them you will gain a friend forever.

The accomodations are basic but that is exactly what we are looking for. The food and restaurant service was just fine. Remember you are on island time.
The bartenders are both excellent. We happened to be celebrating my wife’s birthday while in Jamaica. Tony promised us a special drink when we returned from diner that evening. Not only did we have a special drink, (Flaming Bob Marley) the whole bar sang Happy Birthday to my wife. It was a birthday she will never forget. Paul makes the best Mai Tai’s on the beach. The mudslides and dirty banana’s are the best.

There was some construction going on during our stay but this was really no problem. The crew never started work before 9:00am so we were most likely already at breakfast. They were working on the building in front of D1/D2. Looks like new acomadations will soon come.

There was a problem with the power one night so the AC was not working but the ceiling fan was ok. I never thought I could survive in Jamaica without air conditioning but it was very comfortable with the windows open and the ceiling fan running. You can really hear the tree frogs and the surf also. We opted for no air a few other nights as well.

White sands has the best beach and the security guard is always ready to step in if unwanted vendors are near. He will also grab you a lounge chair for the beach and clean it off.
