The white sands negril is not a 5* hotel and nor does it profess to be one.
Me and my boyfriend decided to take a 2 weeks break in Jamaica and chose Negril. We looked through a large number of hotels in Negril and picked the white sands because of the price (I'm not going to lie, we're in our early 20's and do EVERYTHING on a tight budget).
We booked our own transfer from the airport to the hotel for a very reasonable price using clives airport transfers in a very large, very clean, very WELL air conditioned pepole carrier and had a great coversation with a very knowledgable driver. We got to the hotel at 9pm, 2 hours after the reception closes. The manager had kept the front desk open especially for us so we could check in, I thought this was a nice personal touch. We found we had been upgraded free of charge to a delux beach side room from a standard one again, this was great and was totally unexpected. Our bags were taken for us to our room which was VERY spacious. The room had a double bed and one single bed, a balcony with table and 2 chairs a fridge and a shower room.
The decor in the room wasn't very modern, it reminded me of the types of places I used to stay in florida in the early 90's however, I was not concerned by this at all as the room was clean and well maintained. Our room was cleaned every day and the bed sheets were changed along with our towels (they were a bit crispy but that's a personal thing). The air con in the room is NOT heavy duty, but even coming from the cold shores of england where we are not used to hot weather, the room fan was adequate and if it was too hot we put on the air con for a little bit.
The hotel has no TV's in any of the rooms and no phone, if you want to make a phone call you have to go to reception to buy a phone card and make calls from their phones. The lack of TV was a bit daunting but we took a laptop so we could watch series and films, we were very happy when we realised we could pick up wireless from some of the surrounding hotels and use the internet from the comfort of our own room.
All in all the rooms are basic, but with the price you pay you can't really expect much more. The rooms are always cleaned to a high standard and the maids are really friendly.
There is a bar down at the beach, they do great drinks and good drinks offers, however I would say to give the bar food a miss, it's quite expencive and takes FOREVER. Me and my boyfriend waited an hour and a half once for an order of pancakes, it took them 30 minutes to bring 2 pepsi's (I must stress there was only one person working on the food side of the bar that day) and when the pancakes arrived they were inedible (burnt to a crisp!). After that we did not eat at the hotel, but that doesn't matter because there are SO many great places to eat in negril that cost next to nothing.
The beach was amazing, right in the centre of the 7 mile stretch. Generally, if you turn left as you go out of the hotel you are walking on a stretch of beach where there are LOTS and LOTS of people with stalls, all wanting to sell you their wares. This can be quite annoying but if you stop a few times and talk to them they get to know you over the course of the holiday and gradually leave you alone (advice, if they ask you if this is your 1st time in jamaica, say no and act like you know this place like the back of your hand!) if they try to get you to put things on, say no. Don't buy anything you don't want to and don't feel pressured. If you like something, haggle, start unreasonably low to get yourself a good deal. Also don't feel like you have to go with someone who has stopped you on the beach if they want to take you to a bar/cafe or shop, just politely tell them you have somewhere else to be or something to do and they will leave you alone.
People do try and sell you drugs (namely weed and cocaine) but if you say no, thanks, you're not into that kind of thing and carry on walking they get the message and leave you alone.
If you turn right and walk down that way, you walk toward more of the all inclusive resorts, because these are patrolled by their own security they have NO beach sellers on them.
All in all white sands is great if you're looking for a cheap holiday and are not too fussed about your accomodation. The staff are great and really friendly (except for one woman in reception, you can't MISS her) its in a great location in the middle of the 7 mile beach, the weather was amazing and the locals were friendly (sometimes a little pushy but they're only trying to make a living) the sea was something else and the local and hotel restraunts are good value for money (the portion sizes are SO big me and my bf usually had only starters and were too full to carry on with the meal or we shared one entree between the 2 of us)
