My wife and I just did a last-minute trip to Jamaica and stayed at the Emerald Escape Resort. We knew based on the prices that this wouldn't be a luxury hotel, but we had read a good review on this site so we thought it would be fine for a last-minute getaway. We knew as soon as I got home that we HAD to write a review. Here are the facts so you can be the judge:-The beach image you see on their site is done with a wide angle lens. The beach is only about 5 feet deep and 30 feet long. It is very rocky and for the most part, the water is unsuitable for swimming.-Emerald Resort is not located within walking distance of absolutely anything. The closest town (Montego Bay) is a $40 round trip cab ride away. If you should go, make sure to ask the staff to cart you around instead of getting a taxi. The rate is usually better and they are so underpaid that you will be doing them a favor. Ask for Tony or Patrick both great guys!!-There is however, a place called Nicks next door. It's not a safe walk at night but it's the only other place within 4 miles to get food. All they have is Jerk (Pork, Chicken, Conch, Fish). It was reasonably priced. About $2.50 US can buy you a plate and some breadfruit to go with it. We ate there 3 nights.-The hotel food wasn't too bad, but it was so overpriced ($18 entrees). The menu never changed while we were there. The same 3 dinner choices remained the whole week. The coffee was instant (in Jamaica!?!?) and the cream was powdered. Several times they didn t have items we ordered (on an already limited menu).-The staff was nice for the most part. Most were very willing to help out although any time we asked Carolyn at the front desk for anything it seemed as if we were bothering her.-The decor is early eighties and has had little or no money put back into anything since then.-Our sheets were stained and the mattress and box spring were both covered in questionable stains.-Our curtains were jammed and couldn't open or close.-The bathroom was not in good shape. Our tub had chips missing where rusty metal shone through and there was a constant ant infestation around the sink.-The game room is a joke! It's a room full of garage sale items from another decade.-If you are a scuba diver, you have to go to Negril to get a descent trip. Try Sun Divers and ask for Ansel as your divemaster he was fantastic.THE BOTTOM LINE: If you are trying to save money on a trip to Jamaica this is not necessarily the place to stay, due to the amount of money you have to put out to get ANYWHERE. If you are just looking to have a roof over your head, want to relax in the sun, don't care to leave their scant excuse of a beach, or don't mind paying to get around ($130-$150 to get to Negril or Ocho Rios, $40 to Montego Bay) this place is adequate at best.
