“THE Blue Mt. place to stay!”
Whitfield Hall is about the "last stop" before you start the climb to Blue Mt. Peak. The facilties are spartan (gas lamps, bring your own food, twin beds), but the place, location and people are tops!
I've made the trip to the peak over ten times in thirty years, evrytime spending at least part of one night at the hostel.
In my early days at the peak (1972-1981) Mr. John Algrove (who's grave rests in the back yard) the original proprietor, was in residence. He was a delight to talk and listen to. His son, also John Algrove, now runs the facility from "Town" (Kingston). On the last visit (200), Mr. Vinny, a diminutive, older rasta-like gentlemen, served as "proprietor".
The building and grounds are NOT your typical, sunny Jamaican resort. However, the peaceful nature of the area cannot be matched.
Getting there can be tough. Although I've driven a Ford Escort, Morris pick-up truck, and a Ford Ranger to the hostel, the road is severly rutted and the only vehilce that can pass are high-clearance four wheel drive vehicles. You can park a car in Mavis Bank (park near-by the Police Station. Security is non-existent-but our vehilce was never molested). Mr. Algrove can arrange for a Land Rover to meet you at Marvis Bank.
It takes an effort, but the travel, both to the hostel and the hike to the peak are UNMATCHED.
Why else would we suffer the 5 hour "march" to the peak.
P.S. Have seen only one sunrise (out of ten trips) from the peak, but mon it sweet, no ras!
