Firstly, we really enjoyed our stay at the Barcelo. A lot of the reviews on here are accurate and some are overly critical in our opinion. The staff here are wonderful and are very helpful, they appreciate the smallest of tips and tipping here is the key to excellent service. Those that dont tip, dont have as good an experience as those that do. We're only talking about a dollar here or there, so nothing really compared to back home.
The hotel's beach is the best on the bay - we walked an hour south down the beach and didn't see any that matched ours. The staff are out early every morning cleaning it and it is wonderful. This was the biggest highlight for us and the sea is so clear and warm and some days it is good for boogie boarding as the waves do swell on occasion, then on other days it is better for snorkelling when it's a bit calmer. There is also a lovely continual breeze that helps keep the temperature down, and the only fault that we could find with the beach is the lack of shadey areas compared to other resorts. You will need shade for the first few days of your stay as the sun is very hot and it is easy to burn even with factor 30+ sun cream. The beach is very quiet though and not crowded at all.
The hotel is beautiful and is set within lush gardens and is very well maintained. We had a suite on the end of block 7 and was as close to the beach as you could get. This wasn't a renovated suite and it initially did smell musty, but everywhere smelled musty when we first arrived which I think is due to the high humidity - after a day or two it is un-noticable. We weren't disappointed that we didn't have a renovated suite, as these all seemed to be in the louder part of the hotel, and where we were was peaceful and bliss. The rooms were perfectly fine and more than acceptable. Apparently if you are American or Canadian, you automatically get a renovated suite on check in to save their staff from getting bombarded with complaints, which is understandable as I witnessed a considerable amount of complaints from the North Americans during our 2 week stay.
There were no complaints from us with the food at the hotel. The buffet had an impressive selection, and you cant fail to find plenty that you will enjoy. Dont rely on getting the same type of foods that you are used to at home, for instance, one English guests submitted a 4 page complaint about the type of bacon being used in the breakfast buffet, which is ludicrous, and we didn't go there for their bacon, but for the beach and the view. The a la carte restaurants are fantastic with a great menu choice and high quality meals. We ate at the a la carte restaurants 13 our of our 14 nights, and a couple we used 3 times each, namely the seafood restaurant and the italian one, but all are excellent and have a wide variety of dishes to choose from, including some new and adventurous menu's which you wont get back home.
As a premier club member we had our own lounge and bar on the top floor which was comfortable and well air-conditioned, with free internet access and our own concierge, Rosa, who was wonderful and catered to our every need. Rosa even gave us presents when we were leaving to remember our stay, which we were really touched by. Other notable mentions of the staff were Leornardo at Lobby bar 2, who looked after us well at the bar, and remembers what you are drinking and provides an excellent friendly service.
The new theatre is very impressive, but is very hot there as there are no ceiling fans, and as it is away from the beach, it does not benefit from the sea breeze. Also the new quiet pool is awesome and has a nice jacuzzi area in the centre of it, as well as submerged sun loungers.
Our only complaint over the whole 2 weeks was the constant upset stomach that we both had, and other's that we talked to whilst there also complained of this too. We tried cutting out certain drinks and foods and nothing would shift it. I'm not sure that the water used in the restaurants and for ice is as purified as they claim it is, as this is the only thing that I can think of for the constant stomach pain. It didn't spoil our holiday though, and if they could remedy this it would have been a perfect holiday.
Overall, if you can show some patience and just chill out and enjoy the ambience, you will have a fantastic holiday here.
