We recently stayed at Sivory Punta Cana for which the name implies that they are in the Punta Cana area, but after an hour plus drive down one of the worst roads we have ever been on, we came to find that this hotel really is not even near the famous Punta Cana beaches.
If you are looking for isolation, you will have found it there, as it is not near anything and there is really nothing to do at this hotel but eat or sit on the beach. This would be fabulous for us, except the beaches are not as nice as the beaches in our previous visits to the Punta Cana area (ie; no white powder sand with lovely calm blue hued ocean, more like coarse yellow sand with large brown rough waves), and daily there would be a lot of debris washed onto the beach, which sometimes got cleaned up, and other times not. We were told this was caused by a river mouth North of the hotel, which we were also told was a dangerous area, and that we should not walk that way for our own safety. Okay, that left only one direction to walk the beach each day….pretty limiting.
We honestly wanted to be in a quiet romantic location, that is why we chose Sivory, but had no idea that we would literally be stuck in this mediocre hotel and it’s less than luxurious surroundings, far away from Punta Cana or any town, hotel, souvenier shopping, restaurants or anything really, which pretty much meant no access to other forms of stimulus, unless you wanted to pay more than $100 for round trip taxis rides (on the infamous road) to the closest town of Bavoro.
Since they tote 3 restaurants on the hotel grounds, you would think this would mean excellent dining, which was important to us and again another reason we chose this hotel. Unfortunately, we quickly found that although the food was generally good, the choices were extremely limited, and many times they did not have what we ordered, or the dish was just too similar to something found in one of the other restaurants, so it felt like samo, samo. We were tired of the options within the first 4 days, and frankly a little surprised at the high prices……$10 or so for a coke? $25 per person for a continental breakfast?
Service, although friendly from most all of the staff we encountered, was slow and inconsistent. Sometimes the wait to be served with only a few tables busy in the restaurant was a true test of our patience (and we were in no hurry!). Same goes for the restocking of our minibar, housekeeping, turn down service at night, or the service around the pool area…. sporatic at best. Maintenance issues were small, but numerous and again….slow to respond (never did get our internet connection resolved), so we sometimes found ourselves waiting in our room for someone to show up to explain what needed to be fixed.
Our biggest complaint though would have to be the bugs. We’re not sure if it was bedbugs, sand fleas or mosquitos, or all of the above, but both of us spent most of the trip spraying repellent (supplied complimentary by the hotel…..any wonder why?), and applying anti-itch cream (not supplied by the hotel), neither of which was particularly helpful. I’ll spare you the photos of our bug ridden welted bodies, for which we had to seek treatment when we returned home. Not our idea of a great finish to our vacation!
So overall, for the prices we were paying, we felt this hotel lacked an overall sense of true luxury, and was really lacking in so many ways. Be sure to check your bill when you leave, as they tack on an obscene 26% in taxes and service charges (doesn’t matter if the service wasn’t good), as well as ridiculous phone fees, and a few restaurant bills that were not signed by either of us (which they took off with no arguments).
Although we were not exactly in purgatory, we would definitely not return or recommend this hotel to friends or family, as there are just too many nicer places to explore in the world.
