“Such a bad experience, even for free, never again !”

Sivory Punta Cana

I have the chance to know what real luxury means, having stayed on the best hotels of the planet, like Oberoï, Fregate private island, Pucket Yacht club, Baan taling nam, Oriental, ... BUT this Sivory which pretends to be the best hôtel of the Caraibean, I would definitely avoid. Even for free, I would NEVER stay there again. Everything was bad : beach spoiled, restaurant basic but waiting time like in a three stars, private pool good enough to wash my feet. This small pond was just aside the neighbour and the room above plunged in it ! Forget the privacy. This was sad. Even the room was correct but noisy with room above. There are so many beautifull places and fantastic hotels in the world, I could only regret having waste ime and money there.

“First class service and relaxation”

Sivory Punta Cana

Sivory Punta Cana is the ultimate if you want pure relaxation. Many people on the reviews have complained about the seclusion of the resort, that is obvious from the start so if you don't want it, don't go. The ride to the hotel is not bad, you get to see some countryside. The rooms are gorgeous, especially the bathrooms which have huge bathtubs and showers. I would not pay extra for the plunge pools because these are not heated, however being beachfront is remarkable. The service is wonderful, the people so nice and their English very good. We had plenty of service on the beach and around the pool, which was very refreshing and relaxing. The food is delicious, I would especially recommend the Chilean Sea Bass at Tau. It is the perfect place to have a special occasion, they were able to set up a private dinner, served by the sommelier, on my veranda. It was spectacular! The bugs are not great, especially after it rains, so use bug spray. However I only was bitten at night. I did not have a spa treatment, though it was beautiful. It was the ultimate vacation in relaxation. my entire family went and my mother stated she had never had such a wonderfully relaxing vacation.

“Dissappointment in so many ways.......”

We recently stayed at Sivory Punta Cana for which the name implies that they are in the Punta Cana area, but after an hour plus drive down one of the worst roads we have ever been on, we came to find that this hotel really is not even near the famous Punta Cana beaches.
If you are looking for isolation, you will have found it there, as it is not near anything and there is really nothing to do at this hotel but eat or sit on the beach. This would be fabulous for us, except the beaches are not as nice as the beaches in our previous visits to the Punta Cana area (ie; no white powder sand with lovely calm blue hued ocean, more like coarse yellow sand with large brown rough waves), and daily there would be a lot of debris washed onto the beach, which sometimes got cleaned up, and other times not. We were told this was caused by a river mouth North of the hotel, which we were also told was a dangerous area, and that we should not walk that way for our own safety. Okay, that left only one direction to walk the beach each day….pretty limiting.
We honestly wanted to be in a quiet romantic location, that is why we chose Sivory, but had no idea that we would literally be stuck in this mediocre hotel and it’s less than luxurious surroundings, far away from Punta Cana or any town, hotel, souvenier shopping, restaurants or anything really, which pretty much meant no access to other forms of stimulus, unless you wanted to pay more than $100 for round trip taxis rides (on the infamous road) to the closest town of Bavoro.
Since they tote 3 restaurants on the hotel grounds, you would think this would mean excellent dining, which was important to us and again another reason we chose this hotel. Unfortunately, we quickly found that although the food was generally good, the choices were extremely limited, and many times they did not have what we ordered, or the dish was just too similar to something found in one of the other restaurants, so it felt like samo, samo. We were tired of the options within the first 4 days, and frankly a little surprised at the high prices……$10 or so for a coke? $25 per person for a continental breakfast?
Service, although friendly from most all of the staff we encountered, was slow and inconsistent. Sometimes the wait to be served with only a few tables busy in the restaurant was a true test of our patience (and we were in no hurry!). Same goes for the restocking of our minibar, housekeeping, turn down service at night, or the service around the pool area…. sporatic at best. Maintenance issues were small, but numerous and again….slow to respond (never did get our internet connection resolved), so we sometimes found ourselves waiting in our room for someone to show up to explain what needed to be fixed.
Our biggest complaint though would have to be the bugs. We’re not sure if it was bedbugs, sand fleas or mosquitos, or all of the above, but both of us spent most of the trip spraying repellent (supplied complimentary by the hotel…..any wonder why?), and applying anti-itch cream (not supplied by the hotel), neither of which was particularly helpful. I’ll spare you the photos of our bug ridden welted bodies, for which we had to seek treatment when we returned home. Not our idea of a great finish to our vacation!
So overall, for the prices we were paying, we felt this hotel lacked an overall sense of true luxury, and was really lacking in so many ways. Be sure to check your bill when you leave, as they tack on an obscene 26% in taxes and service charges (doesn’t matter if the service wasn’t good), as well as ridiculous phone fees, and a few restaurant bills that were not signed by either of us (which they took off with no arguments).
Although we were not exactly in purgatory, we would definitely not return or recommend this hotel to friends or family, as there are just too many nicer places to explore in the world.

“Spotty”

Our trip was not good at all!
They lost our reservation and our luggage on arrival, our suite flooded the first night. The plunge pool looked more like a pond with things swimming in it. The bugs were horrendous and we are still itching. There was no pool service or beach service. the beach towels ran out early. The staff were friendly but so slow with service. Lunch would take 90 minutes, we gave up on breakfast but dinner, slow as it was, was excellent. The lobster at Tau was the best. My parents were charged $10 taxi ride because they asked the concierge for some postcards which they then charged then $10 for! He said that he went into town to get them! The beach was great for a walk after some Russians jumped up and down as it was filthy and they insisted it was cleaned. The beach was not reset in the morning and we had to remove glasses and towels to sit there again! Four other rooms were unhappy as well as we all joined up for dinner one night.
We gave the concierge a 'Wish List' each day as we found that was the most effective way to get things resolved such as maintenance issues, restocking the room and replacing filthy furniture outside! If you call them they respond slowly but giving a 'Wish List' helps. Finally ask for your bill regularly as there were some charges we had to dispute!

Management Response
carmePuntaCana, owner
(Management representative)
Feb 9, 2008
As creator and owner of Sivory Punta Cana I was disheartened to read the comments dated January 18th, 2008 on Trip Advisor. I am a very active owner/manager in that I actually am on property every day. This affords me the opportunity to know each guest and to familiarize myself with their history. In this case I was absolutely amazed to read the comments by this guest for numerous reasons. I felt compelled to respond due to the nature of the comments and the fact that they were so far removed from what actually transpired.

It is also an affront to the hard working staff that were not only insulted but portrayed as being incompetent. This again is not the truth, as our staff is humble, kind and dedicated people. We would not have it any other way.

But let me address the negative comments and what actually transpired. We were advised after this guest’s arrival to be prepared for a difficult stay and complaints upon departure, regardless of the actual experience. Apparently there is a history of this type of behavior by this particular guest for reasons we cannot understand except to say perhaps monetary.

Despite being warned that we could end up in a situation where the guest is not satisfied no matter the efforts, we welcome this guest as we do all of our guests – with Caribbean hospitality and warmth. We did this even though we were forewarned we could end up on internet comments in a negative light. Sadly to say that is exactly what happened.

But as an owner and responsible member of the hospitality industry I believe it is high time that someone spoke up for hotels wrongly accused of providing in adequate service. Internet provides publics, honest and responsible forums in which to either communicate dissatisfaction but in a truthful manner, or to communicate satisfaction. Usually are not forums in which to misrepresent facts or make false statements.

Let me say that the ordeal for us began at check-in when the guest would not present his credit card for imprint. This is customary as all travelers understand. There was absolutely no reason for him to not present his credit card but he insisted on not presenting.

The behavior progress to baseless complaints, including room repairs (our resort is nearly 3 years old) which of course we investigated knowing we would find nothing. From there the guest ordered expensive drinks and requested that the waiters hide the tickets in order not to be charged the full amount. This would enable him to complain upon checkout. Not only was this ludicrous but it was absolutely shocking to the staff and myself.

From then on it was absolutely clear what the objective of the visit was – not relaxation but a free trip at the expense of everyone involved. This would entail a skillful and well-practiced attempt to not pay for expensive drinks ordered during the stay.
My goal in responding to the negative comments is simply to say to the readers that Sivory, our team of professionals and owners including myself are committed to service excellence. It is a standard that has garnered an AAA 4 Diamond status. We do not take our role as providers of exceptional hospitality lightly. It is our commitment to delivering service that exceeds the guest’s expectations. We are the first to correct a situation in which we are responsible for not meeting the guests’ satisfaction. I cannot accept such outrageous comments that are so far from the truth. We as owners owe to our hard-working team and our guests.

I hope that this particular guest will learn to respect the hard work and dedication of hospitality professionals when traveling. But most of all, I hope that he will recognize the fact that we are not in the business of offering complimentary rooms, food and drink. When you select a high-end resort, or any accommodations for that matter it is expected you will pay for your stay. You do not cheat the owners but the men and women whose livelihoods depend upon tourism.

In the interim, we invite travelers to experience service at Sivory Punta Cana for yourselves and not judge us based upon the comments of someone seeking a complimentary travel experience.

Sincerely,

Carme Buisan
Executive VP.

“Wedding at Sivory”

My husband and I had our wedding at Sivory Punta Cana. So far I think only a few adventurous people had their wedding there. It's a wonderful place for people that are not looking for the traditional "church and country club reception" wedding. Given the resort's remote location, it was a little bit more difficult to schedule everything but it was totally worth it.
The setting was beautiful and we were lucky to have wonderful weather. The resort staff tried their best to accomodate our needs and in the end all of the scheduling related wrinkles got ironed out. There are too many wedding details/tips to list here but if you look in having a small & intimate wedding you should definetely consider this site.
Should you plan in having your wedding at this resort, feel free to contact us and we will be happy to share some of our pictures.
