Don't listen to the bad reviews....the Majestic Colonial was very nice. We just returned yesterday after a week stay and I have to say that we were relieved after reading the reviews on this web site. We had a very nice time.
Food - The food was above average as compared to an Iberostar all inclusive we stayed at last year in Cancun. We live in New York and are used to the great food of NYC and these restaurants, on the whole, did not disappoint. Of course some restaurants rated higher for us than others. Our favorite was the French restaurant, Le Gourmet. The food (especially the bisque soup and the filet mignon) was really good. We also had the grouper and chicken which were good. We ate here twice. The seafood (Tres Carabela) and steak (Rodeo Grill) restaurants were decent. As written in other reviews, the grilled lobster at the seafood restaurant and the chateaubriand at the steak restaurant were very good. These two restaurants are in an open air location on the beach and were a little warm the nights we were there. Our least favorite restaurant was the Dominican/Carribean (Taino) and I think it was purely because it was our first night, we were tired and the service was not very good. The food was good. Breakfast and lunch at the Gourmet Buffet was incredible. There is nothing that they did not offer. Everything was great here...fresh pasta bar, omelets, paella, hamburgers, fruit, soup, salad, etc. Beware that your bathing suit cannot even be damp to enter this restaurant for lunch. They do feel your bathing suit or make you sit on a chair to see if it leaves a wet mark. The security guard made at least one person from our group of 8 go back to the room to change each day. You cannot get one over on the guys. Lunch is also available at the beach if you don't want to deal with this issue, but the food selection does not compare. It's definitely worth drying off or changing. By the way, while we did not eat dinner at the Buffet restaurant, the food selection for lunch is the same as dinner. Also, the Japanese/Asian restaurant was also good. The tepanyaki side was fun and food was nice and fresh. The ala carte side was just OK.
Rooms - alot written about the lack of bathroom privacy.....just go with it. We traveled with our 16 year old son and 13 year old daughter and we found ways around it. The room is so big that you don't even realize someone is in the bathroom. As far as showering and privacy...put on a cover up or the robes they provide to come out of the shower. Before we arrived, I thought I would be able to change in the shower area since everyone said it was so big, but the entire shower area does get wet. There was enough room to stand in the water closet and get dressed or you could open a couple of the closet doors and stand behind them. It was no big deal even with the four of us. On the whole, rooms were very large and clean. In contrast to a couple of reviews, we had wash cloths every day.
As I'm sure you read, there are 4 buildings....1, 2, 3 and 4. They each start up near the lobby and extend like fingers to the beach. The pool is the second largest in the Carribean and extends the entire length of the resort from the lobby to the beach and is located between buildings 2 and 3. Unbelievable pool!
General - Lobby/Piano bar was great. It was quiet, the music was nice and Roberto the bartender was great! He made a really nice champagne cocktail which the other bartenders could not make. The only champagne cocktail they knew about was a mimosa! While we didn't see or feel any mosquitos, we did get bitten. Bring some anti-itch cream. Again, not a big deal. Don't leave the balcony door open and you won't have any bugs in your room. I did not smell any musty odor as reported in some of the reviews. I brought room freshener just in case and did not use it. There were reviews about the rudeness of the employees. We did not experience any rudeness. However, they did not go out of their way to say hello. We were in Cancun for the two previous summers and the locals there are extremely friendly. Obviously, the Domincans are not as friendly as the Mexicans, but they were not rude. No one in our party of 8 got sick. The employees tell you upon arrival not to drink the tap water and don't overdo it on milk based food/drink because they use goat milk and not cow milk.....this includes pina coladas! We didn't even use the tap to brush our teeth..they provide bottled water in the room refrigerators. The only disappointment is that there weren't any waitresses taking drink orders at the pool. This is a family resort and anyone who is going there without children and then complain about the fact that there are kids needs to go to an adult-only all inclusive.
We had a great time and were relieved that the negative reviews were over dramatized.
