My husband and I stayed at the Colony Club for 2 weeks at the end of May 2008. We stayed in a pool/garden room, bed and breakfast. The room was lovely and spacious with a huge bathroom with bath and shower and a large patio. We were not sure what to expect as there were no pictures of the rooms on the website but I’m pleased now that we didn’t pay the extra for the ocean view as they didn’t have a front on view and didn’t seem worth the extra. Our room was lovely, looked out over the pool and was really peaceful as it is set to the back of the resort. Air conditioning was brilliant, a bit too cold sometimes, and we had a mini bar fridge, iron and ironing board as well as a hairdryer. Breakfast was good with a choice of fruit, ham, cheeses, porridge, pastries, cereals, english muffins, bagels, bacon, sausage and an egg chef! I’m glad we booked B&B as there are so many restaurants to eat at I would have been upset to miss out on those. Also the food in the Orchid Room we heard wasn’t that good compared to what you can have outside of the resort but as we didn’t eat there I can’t say for sure. There were a lot of mosquitoes around and we both got bitten so make sure you take plenty of spray for you and the room! We were very lucky that there was hardly any rain during our stay and if there was it was either overnight or a 10 minute shower.
The pools and beach are lovely. The beach is quite steep and there are a few rocks in the sea but we were told that it depends on what time of year you go as sometimes the rocks just disappear. There are lots of sun loungers and towels provided but for some strange reason people seem to get up as early as 6am to reserve the best beds on the beach and I even heard 5am to get the best ones by the pool! There is a swim up bar and beach attendants to get you drinks whilst you sun bathe and they even bring around free fruit in the morning and ice cream in the afternoon. Lunch on the deck was good and the menu includes things like burgers, club sandwiches, Caesar salads, fish, crab cakes etc. and the service is excellent. There are a few buffets during the week which are good value but you need to get in quickly! The only down side are the beach vendors. They are pretty relentless and one morning we were approached by 10 in half an hour. Most of them take a polite ‘No’ for an answer but a few will push it a bit more. My advice is don’t let them touch you if they offer a massage, don’t say Yes to any free samples and don’t let the jewellery sellers open their cases as you will never get rid of them. Another word of warning – I had my camera taken from the beach so don’t leave any valuables whilst you go for lunch, swimming etc. There are water sports available for free such as Hobie Cats, water skiing, snorkelling. Jet skis you have to pay for and I think it was about $60BDS for 15 mins.
There are lots of trips that you can sign up for. We did the Catamaran trip on the Silver Moon which was fantastic. The people who run the boat are brilliant and there is an open bar, lunch provided and cocktails in the afternoon. We swam with turtles, snorkelled over a shipwreck and moored just off Sandy Lane for our lunch and a swim. Before arriving back we went right out to sea which was fun. It was well worth the $220BDS each. Some of the other boats offering this hold up to 50 people but Silver Moon have a maximum of 12 which was much nicer in my opinion. A lady at the resort also did the Grenadines trip which sounds amazing so we will do this next time we visit. We hired a car for three days through Regency Car Hire and they charged us $108BDS per day for 2 days and got the third day free which was a real bargain as we got an automatic Suzuki with a/c. We drove around the island which I’d highly recommend as it truly is a beautiful place. The nicest beach we found was Crane beach on the SE coast which was white, almost pink, sand, no rocks and the waves were rougher then the west coast so it was perfect for body boarding. Near to the beach is ‘Cutters’, a deli where you can buy a picnic lunch to eat on the beach. We also visited the Wildlife reserve which was good fun, lots of monkeys and tortoises wandering around. The monkeys get fed between 2pm & 3pm so that’s the best time to go but we went earlier in the day and still saw lots.
All of the restaurants we ate in were fabulous and we didn’t have a bad meal whilst in Barbados. The loveliest was without a doubt The Cliff, which is just spectacular and the food is the best I’ve ever had as is the service there. Tides is almost on a par with the Cliff and is more than worth a visit, they really spoiled us for our wedding anniversary. Lobster Alive on the beach in Bridgetown was also good and was only open Tues and Wed lunchtime but may be more in high season. Cocomos is relaxed, a lively bar, excellent west Indian chicken curry and just down the road from the CC, you can even walk there in the day from the CC beach. The Lone star restaurant was also nice and I’d recommend their shepherds pie and Thai green curry. We also had Sunday lunch at Sandy Lane; you need to pre-book this before at the CC reception. It was the nicest buffet I’ve seen with sushi bar, barbecue, seafood, cold meats, salads, roast meats and vegetables, two tables of desserts and cheeses. For 2 with wine it cost $730BDS which isn’t cheap but it was an experience. If you are craving for some good home cooking then Groots down the road from CC does steak and kidney pudding and beef and onion pie, fish and chips etc. and is fairly cheap good food.
There have been a few negative comments about the Colony Club on this site especially about the staff. Our experience was completely different. If you are polite and friendly to people then most of the time we find that they respond similarly. All of the staff were helpful and they really work very, very hard to make your stay enjoyable, everyone says ‘Hi’ when walking around the resort. Rooms were spotlessly clean with linen changed every other day, drinks served perfectly and didn’t have to wait long, and meals were lovely and served with a smile. Taxis were called immediately if you needed them and queries at reception answered straight away. The gardens and pool area is clean and well kept with people working on them from very early in the morning and they even have a security man on the beach. Niall from the beach bar recommended a local bar for us to watch the Champions League final and it was the best afternoon I’ve had for ages, the Bajans love football (most of them support Man Utd) and the atmosphere was just brilliant!
We would definitely return to Barbados and the Colony Club, we really didn’t want to come home! Fabulous island, people and fabulous hotel.
