“Great Hotel”

Monterey Akasaka

5 of 5 stars
Somewhere.

Great Hotel. Its practically a brand new hotel, so the overall facilities are excellent. Very conveneintly located. Just 2 minutes walk from the Akasaka Station (Exit A). Extremely helpful staff, think of the littlest things (loaner umbrellas when it was raining, if you call for something say an iron...its in your room in less than 2 minutes etc).

The only problem was that the room was extremely small...and I mean that! Its advertised as 189 sf...which I am sure is correct. But when you actually look at it...you realize how small is that. As an example...I was sitting on the chair at the desk, there was not enough space for my wife to pass behind me without hopping on the bed.

So if you are not claustrophobic or dont have to spend much time in the room...then you are OK. I would definitely go back.

TIP: to get to this place from Narita airport, two ways:
- Narita Express: Take it to Tokyo Station, take the subway from there to Akasaka Mitsuke Station (Line M), get out at Exit A, walk straight for 300-400 meters. You will pass a Starbucks, and a Doutor Coffee Shop. Its right after the Aston Martin Showroom. Slightly cheaper than the next option, and is faster but less convenient.

- Airport Express: Take it to Hotel Excel. If you have a lot of luggage, get the name/address of the hotel written in Japanese at the Aiport Express Ticket counter, and cab it. Otherwise its only a 5 min walk from Excel. Walk out of Excel, cross the mainroad and turn left. Walk for just a block, and then make a left turn at 60degrees. You will pass a First City Conveneince Kitchen...a Starbucks...and its next to the Aston Martin Showroom on your left.

“Très bon choix”

Monterey Akasaka

Jun 30, 2008

“Little Gem in Tokyo”

Monterey Akasaka

Jun 21, 2008

We stayed at this lovely hotel for 3 nights in May. It took us quite a long time to find the right location and place for our budget. Tokyo is a huge city with almost 13 million people living in the area. So you can imagine the trouble in finding the right neighbourhood to stay in for first time travellers to Japan.

We chose the Akasaka because of the good reviews on Tripadvisor. We found the reviews consistent and this hotel is great and the service is very good.

The hotel is located about a 10 minute walk from Akasaka-Mitsuke station. The walk is up a small hill or slope to the hotel, keep going past the Bentley dealership and eventually you'll find it. It's nice to head downhill to the subway on the way back.

We tried the walk down hill from Aoyama-Itchome station and it took us right past the Canadian Embassy and was about a 15 to 20 minute walk.

The rooms were clean, and small. But what do you expect in Tokyo. Washrooms come with a nice assortment of ammenities that include razors, hair clips and bath sponges along with the regular assortment. The pressure from the shower was amazing! I've never felt anything stronger and was pretty reminiscent of the episode of Seinfeld where Kramer gets that huge shower head for elephants and gets blown out of the shower.

Rooms come with a humidifier, air purifier, hot water pot, blow dryers, teas/coffee, a fridge with complimentary water, and pajamas! The pj's are soft and comfortable. The beds are comfortable and the pillows were down filled. There's a vending machine in the hallways, a beer goes for about 250 to 350 yen.

If you need a computer for internet access you can rent one from 12 pm to 12 pm only for about 1,050 yen. They don't rent them for 24 hours, just 12 pm to 12 pm only.

The area is nice and clean. A walk down the street takes you past a Lawson's convenience store a few bakeries and restaurants. A little longer walk takes you to many great restaurants, just ask the front desk for a map of the area and recommendations.

At night, it's pretty quiet because mostly politicians and government officials stay and work in the area. For a little more lively area we'd recommend Shibuja or Shin-Juku.

We were considering the B Akasaka, Monterey Honzomon, and the Prince Shinigawa. We landed at the Monterey because of price and location.

For a livelier time we'd recommend the Prince Shinigawa, it's in Shinjuku, and the area isn't as bad as the reviews state on Trip Advisor.

“Liked it!”

Monterey Akasaka

Jun 5, 2008

Nice hotel. Clean. Style. Friendly. Pay ~90 EUR for a single, ~120EUR for a twin which seemed fair. Rooms are obviously small, but normal for Tokyo, I guess. 15 min to metro. Good location.

“Lovely hotel in Akasaka”

Monterey Akasaka

This is a lovely hotel located about 3 blocks from Akasaka-Mitsuke subway station. The airport bus does not go here so take it to the Excel and grab a taxi from there. It is best if you know the location in Japanese as this is not a big hotel and the taxi drivers are not great at this even with the Garmin! Once there we took business cards from the desk when we traveled to and from Tokyo station. This was most helpful. We also had the staff do the Japanese address for the hotel in Kyoto as well. The staff were most helpful with good English skills. The hotel rooms are SMALL - average by Tokyo standard. Either don't bring a lot of luggage or prepare to leave some of your things packed. The hotel price on the internet was great so we booked the week and traveled from there with the smaller suitcases we brought for the shinkansen - there is little luggage space on Japanese trains. We did not use the restaurant as there are many places to eat near Akasaka-Mitsuke. Amenities were excellent with high speed internet included. We had no problem getting a non-smoking room. We will definitely stay there again.
