hello,

looking forward to a trip down from canada later this month...

is there anywhere close to the city center we could pick up groceries? we'll definitely be making use of the market but for some basics a regular store would be good. one of those giant walmarts would work too.

thanks in advance for your help!

There are several markets in town, some more "super" than others. Where will you be staying?

Down on Columbus blvd (along the delaware river) you will find every store you could ask for. Supermarkets, super walmarts....everything.

Closer to your hotel is a Superfresh. It's at the corner of 10th and South Streets.

Reading Terminal Market is not the kind of market where you can stock up on necessities. It's more of a produce/meat/gourmet kind of place. Your best bet would be the aforementioned SuperFresh. There is a free garage (get your ticket stamped at the store cashier) above the store with direct elevator access to the store. Drive straight down 10th Street about 5 blocks.

I think the Whole Foods supermarket on Callowhill and Pennslvania Ave. would be closest of the larger supermarkets. It's not inexpensive, but it's not a specialty gourmet food store, either. Just a pretentious supermarket with slightly inflated prices. From the Reading Terminal Market, it'd be about 7 blocks west, maybe 4 major blocks north.

There's also the ever-popular little local chain Wawa, which has a store at 1038 Arch St, near the convention center (I believe it's actually tucked in under the bit that arches over 10th St.) Again, you won't get discount prices but they're basically tiny grocery stores - if you need eye drops, a needle and thread, bananas or a newspaper at 11pm, they're there.

There is a Trader Joe's store at 2121 Market Street, and it has a parking lot. Trader Joe's is a very popular chain, with a good selection of healthy food at discount prices. And bargain wine and chocolate too! You might even want to bring some of their items back to Toronto!

TrAder Joe's in Pennsylvania does not sell wine, as the state has strict rules reagrding who can sell wine. Also, don't be fooled by the packaging- much of the food is just gussied-up junk food. Really, really good junk food mind you, but only some of the items are "healthy'. Read the nutrition labels. The store is interesting. They do have healthy stuff, too, but you have to be careful. Their stuff is either really good for you or really bad for you, and the packaging makes it all look the same.

Sorry about the misleading wine comment. Most Trader Joes' carry wine, but not in Pennsylvania. Still, it's a good store for prepackaged meals.
