Hi!

My boyfriend an I were suppose to visit Culebra island 8-18 of August, unfortunately, we had to change our travel date to 15-25.

How risky do you think it is for us to visit Culebra at the end of August? I am a bit concerned about the hurricanes & tropical storms that could ruin our vacations. Ok, concerned a lot!!!

We may change our dates again for August 1st-10th if it's too risky. I need a valuable opinion. Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer my question.

The oidds of a hurricane striking Culebra during the period August 15 to August 25 are nearly the same as August 1 through August 10 - and that's small. The thing is no one can predict NOW if there will be a major storm brewing AT THAT TIME and, if so, if it will come anywhere close to Culebra. Typically you only get about 10 days warning of a storm and only 5 days warning it will track over a certain area.

You can review the historical records of all the hurricanes that have affected Culebra since 1852 at:

stormcarib.com/climatology/TJCL_all_isl.htm

If you study the chart you'll see in the last 156 years there have been 55 huricanes that have struck Culebra - 17 of them in August.

I agree that no one can say now what will happen in August.

Keep an eye on the National (US) Hurricane Center's website for all the latest information. You can even subscribe to their email updates so you're informed on a daily basis of anything that may be brewing.

NHC website is http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

Hope this helps!

If you are really concerned, buy some travel insurance that covers hurricanes. That way, if Mother Nature doesn't cooperate with your vacation plans, you won't lose any money.

Thank you so, so much for your advices, I find them very useful.

17 hurricanes in august over 155 total... That's about a 10% risk, isn't? As you all said though, nature is always unpredictable.

I'll get informed about the insurance that covers hurricanes for sure.

Merci!!!

I have had several trips effected by Tropical storms. Usually the Airlines will let you reschedule with no cost or problem. Most of the hotels in PR are also very good about it. Never had a problem. The only problem is work and changing vacation dates. We were once on the island when it was hit. It only lasted a couple days. Safety is not so much an issue (They know how to build in Puerto Rico), the issues are with the infrastructures after. Power, water etc. The major hotels will have generators and bottle water. If Culebra gets hit, it won't be the first time no the last. You will be fine. We have had some good hurricane parties. Board games, Rum punch and candle light. Relax.

(55/156)x(17/55)= 10% chance, at last! Eeeh, maths aren't my thing really.

Two of our friends had to come back from Riviera Maya at the end of August last year because of hurricane Dean.

I remember that they had to pay their plane ticket back to Montréal. However, I think they had a refund on their hotel.

I'll stay on the main island if the weather is getting ugly though. But it won't, right? :-)

Thanks again for your precious advices!
