Hello all :)

My boyfriend and I have decided that we are finally going

to get going to Japan.

Though I was wondering how should we ask for English based menus and ingredients item list?

My boyfriend is anaphylactic of dairy products,

so I want to unsure we can know what he is digesting.

Any helpful tips or advice is greatly appreciate.

Thank you :)

A very recent discussion on English menu:

I doubt you will find an infredients item list. However, most Japanese food does not contain dairy items.

There is no easy way to get ingredients. Dairy products are not common in Japanese cooking but could be in breads, cakes and cookies. You also need to be careful with light sauces that may contain cream. Cheese is not common in Japanese food and neither is milk products. Things like broiled fish, tofu, yakiniku (bbq meats) and other Japanese staples are safe.

I don't know anything about this company but they offer a variety of custom cards in many languages for people like you (check out the Strongly Worded Cards). They do ship to Australia.

In other forums about dietary restrictions it was suggested that you check out the many convenience stores, where you can study the prepackaged food. It might help you to learn the kanji (Japanese characters) for cow milk: 牛乳, or to print it and take with you.

Anyone who can provide a stongly worded sentence in Japanese?

Don't try to learn the phrases! Print out the card and point to the sentence. It's impossible to get the pronounciation right and people will not want to offend you by admitting they have no idea what you say.

>> people will not want to offend you by admitting they have no idea what you say.

On the contrary, they will say "yes" and nod and make you think like everything is understood, until the food shows up.

On the other hand, the proper pronuciation takes only 30 minutes to learn.
