The river is a little quieter than Sukhumvit Road so it will depend on whether you want to be nearer more bars and restaurants or would enjoy the scenery of watching the traffic on the Chao Praya, both options are good but different.

Our favorite hotel on Sukhumvit is the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit. It is directly on the Asoke Skytrain Station and it is very comfortable and well appointed.

By the river you have the Shangri La which I think is having renovations at the moment, The Peninsula and The Oriental, these three are near the Skytrain, further upstream you have the Millenium Hilton and the Royal Orchid Sheraton.

Regards

Robert

I mean it depends on what you want to do in Bangkok. Like mentioned above, both locations are good for different reasons. What do you want to do?

I agree with the posters above depends on what you like to do, sukhumvit has the advantage of being only a short walk after a night out but is much busier as an area. My favourite Hotel in Sukhumvit is The Landmark which is almost on top of Nana sky train station and 2 mins walk from Nana entertainment area and 10 mins walk from Soi Cowboy, night market all up and down the road outside the Hotel.

River is quieter but not quite so easy to get to the night life or trains. Great river busses though!

I'd say by the river.

Centre Point Silom, Shangrila, Oriental, Peninsula, Marriott Resort etc.

I have heard the new one, New Siam Riverside, it is in a very good location, you get to stay by the river for better traffic and get to be near nightlife like Khaosan Rd. though..and not pricey.

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions i'll check out all of them. I'm travelling alone and so being a female i won't be going into bars at night on my own. I'd like to do lots of sight seeing and getting to enjoy the culture and vibes the city has to offer.

Hi;

I have been in Sukhumvit hotels 3x in the last year+

and shall return to the same hotel later this year again. I could Not think any other river hotel can Fit my plan and budget vacations in Bangkok.

The Sukhumvit road is noisy for sure as a center of entertainment and shopping at nights . However, there are many advantages that Sukhumvit can offer

to tourists. The Bangkok bureau of tourism estimated

65% foreigners stay in the Sukhumvit area including Expat

Hi

Trat

thank you

Your post just reconfirmed why I stay near the river

I go to thailand to embrace the people and culture of that country not to be around other westerners..

If 65% of foreigners and expats go there and it is noisy

then I will go where there are less foreigners.

but to be honest all of Bangkok is noisy LOL
