Hi,

For those that are coming to the Gold Coast, if you have one do not forget to bring binocular's (did I spell that correct?). We have been seeing so many whales from our holiday apartment balcony (have lost count :-) ) and of course they are best seen with binocular's.

ALSO this afternoon we went to our favourite beautiful area here on the Gold Coast, Fingal Head, and there was a whale about 100meters away! It was fantastic. It was there for quite a while, we were actually a bit worried that it had lost it way and could not get past the small island... yes for those who know this spot it was swimming between the area where the light house is and the small island opposite. But hopefully it was just resting. We had to leave as the sun was going down.

Please do not ask me further questions about this post, I have no idea when I will be on the internet again and I would hate it if people are waiting for an answer.

But if anyone does have a question maybe other locals can answer it :-)

Bye for now from Coolangatta.

Roma01,

Your post today has been the most uplifting story I have read on TA.

Thank you for sharing your valuable insights and knowledge about spotting the whales on the Gold Coast.

Your report has brought me a enormous desire and information regarding slipping away from Sydney into the clear and pristine waters of the Pacific Ocean to hopefully spot some awesome whales.

With the winds, the waters are totally flat so its absolutely perfect timing for whale watching.

Hi Roma,

Yes there has been sooo many whales passing the Gold Coast recently its very exciting!!

There were 11 seperate pods of whales counted on Tuesday alone! Which may have been when you were at Fingal.

I am going Deep Sea Fishing on Friday so I hope I spot a couple up close and personal!!

WOW 11 pods! No we did not see so many on Tuesday, we saw most of them Wednesday and late afternoon yesterday.

Today the water was rather choppy so was difficult to see them. ha ha sounds like we are most of the time looking out for whales. When we are in our appartment we do have a look and see them usually straight away.

Wow. Sounds amazing. We are going to be there during August - will there still be whales then?

I personally saw about 3 pods of hump back whales whilst fishing offshore from Broadbeach/Surfers yesterday!

They should still be around in August. I think the season goes through to the end of October.

Fantastic Stuff!!

Thanks Roma, great to hear. If you are still around the area Point Danger is also a good place to whalewatch and if you have a car, a quick trip down to Cape Byron can be very wothwhile. It is very heartening that the whale numbers are on the increase.

Beachbum, rub it in why don't you...did you finally win lotto and buy "us" a boat? What did you catch?

Hi Surfoz,

No lottery wins of late!! Unfortunately.

Myself and a dozen blokes from work chartered a boat out of Labrador for a days fishing.

Got onto some Snapper, Tailor and Trevally mostly, but the wind blew right up after lunch and the swell was about 2 metres. Dissapointing as it had been like a lake all week!!!

The boys did get onto a shark or something and fought it for about 30 minutes before the line snapped!!

We saw 8 Humpacks and dozens of dolphins off Pt.Lookout on Stradbroke Island last week - all within the mere 1/2 hour we had at South Gorge lookout.

The Gelati shop there is keeping count and have had days where the numbers have run into the Hundreds !

They are all heading north to have their babies( many are pregant now so not breaching so much) and will return - with infants in tow - in late August/Sept/Oct when they are even more active and interesting to watch.

It is very humbling to watch. We are indeed living in the lucky country.

Has anyone seen Migaloo yet ? ( The albino whale)
