When in Montreux in June we are planning a day trip to

1) Go to Guryees to see town and cheese factory (sorry)

2) Go to Broc to the chocolate factory

3) Go to Fribourg to have supper.

Anyone have any suggestions. We are not taking the train becuase a friday is the only day we can do this and the special train does not run.

Thanks

Sounds good to me! Fribourg isn't exactly on the way back to Montreux though. It's a lovely town. I wasn't there at night, so don't know about restaurants for dinner. Don't be sorry about the cheese factory! lol! We had a great time there and at the chocloate factory! It's all good! LOL!

Have a great time!We found a great little Italian restaurant in Montreux. It's on the first street up from the lake about four blocks down (east)from the Swiss majestic hotel. Outside seating, great food and service! We also enjoyed the Meat Bar right on the lake. We missed steak...what can I say? LOL

Never visited a cheese or chocolate factory but Fribourg for supper sounds great. It has a charming old town and a few great restaurants. On the way back you can use the motorway and you will be back in Montreux in less than an hour.

Cheers,

Hi CanadianGuy2007,

You can still take the train to Gruyeres and the bus to Broc -- no need to rely on the special tourist trains. Trains and busses go on these routes every day, several times a day. And you won't be alone -- lots of tourists from all over the world are doing it on their own as well.

From Montreux, you take the train to Gruyeres (change in Montbovon) then stroll uphill to the medieval village. Stroll through the steet, peck in at the castle, etc. Definitely have some berries in creme-double.

From Gruyeres, take the bus to Broc and to the Cailler factory. Information for fees & times at

www.cailler.ch

You can get all these schedules at the Swiss rail site,

www.rail.ch

I think renting a car for one day will be astronomical -- and unnecessary if your instinct is to use the trains.

Have fun!

Hi,

Driving to Gruyeres is pretty easy. From Montreux point yourself towards Vevey and just as you reach Vevey take the A12 motorway towards Fribourg/Bern. The exit for Gruyeres is well sign posted off the motorway. In Gruyeres I usually go to the excellent cheese museum (which is probably the factory you mention) by the train station (unintentionally amusing audio tour, cheese making demonstrations at certain times of day and a free packet of cheese at the end) and to the lovely chateau in the town. There is a shop attached to the cheese museum, but I find it slightly cheaper to buy a cheese and bread picnic in the small town grocers. Obviously, it is cheaper altogether if you buy your picnic in advance from a normal supermarket, but it is more fun to buy Gruyeres in Gruyeres!

With a little time, I'd recommend driving up to Moleson village (5 minutes drive from the station) and taking the funicular and cable car to the top of the highest mountain in the prealpes (2002m), which is called Moleson. There are really beautiful views and in June, you will enjoy seeing cows bonging their bells in the flowery meadows. Sometimes you can see marmots in the scree below as you are in the cable car.

The chocolate factory in Broc remains on my list of places to go - so let me know if you enjoy your visit there.

I'm trying to remember about parking in Fribourg, which I haven't done for years. I think we may have parked in the cinema parking. Hopefully, others will have a better idea. Fribourg is a lovely pretty town.

Just to throw another dining alternative into the mix (and perhaps one which you could do another day if you still had the car)...with a car (just off the A12 motorway, which is the one you will be on), I have to put in a bid for having a sunset hot chocolate or fondue at my favourite mountain buvette (working farm restaurant), La Saletta. It's a real local place for local people and isn't somewhere easy to stumble across. I have written about how to get to the village below the buvette and then the second link tells you how to get up to the mountain buvette from the village:

tripadvisor.com/Travel-g644345-c57837/Les-Pa…

tripadvisor.com/Travel-g644345-s5/Les-Paccot…

If it interests you, I've previously posted some pictures of the buvette which you can see if you click on traveller photos and scan through about 2/3 of the photos (the photo is called Buvette Saletta high above Les Paccots, August, 2007 and there are a couple of others after this one). Very occasionally it is full, so it might be worth making a reservation, or if not, there's another almost as nice buvette about another 5 minutes drive along the road.

Have a great trip and do let us know how you get on.
