Braunwald and Winterthur for 8 days in February |
|
Hello. As mentioned above, I will be travelling with my husband and 6 year old son in Feb.. Yeah! We are meeting old friends in Braunwald for our first 4 days, (they have been going to the Toeliblick for generations), and then we will go to their home in Winterthur. I imagine that we will go to Zurich as it is close by. I have concerns about the altitute-7,000 plus feet and feeling sick. I live at sea level now. Anyone been to Braunwald? If so, how did you acclimate? Also, I may not be able to ski due to an injury-any other options? I can hike and sled. How freezing will it be? What footwear is necessary? Any other advise would be wonderful. Many thanks in advance and Happy 2008. |

Hey, I wouldn't worry about feeling sick. The village of Braunwald is only about 4000 feet high. Just avoid going further up the first day and I am pretty sure you will be fine. Never been myself to Braunwald but I heard it is very nice to walk / hike. At the moment it is -2 degrees celcius (about 28 degrees fahrenheit). As you can expect snow covered walking ways I would bring warm shoes with rough soles. Have fun & happy new year! bowmore

Braunwald is a car free village reached by funicular from Linthal in Canton Glarus. The 7,000ft plus quote are the heights at the top of the ski lifts but I still believe you have to be a bit higher to start feeling the affects of altitude sickness. It should be covered in snow a good pair of boots would be essential for walking about.

I have been going to Braunwald for years with groups of British schoolkids and their parents and no one has ever suffered from altitude sickness - although there has been overindulgence in the Gade Bar under the Hotel Alpenblick which has led to a few upets the following day amongst the groun-ups! It is a fair hike up to the Toediblick but it is a charming hotel and I am sure you will enjoy it and the resort. Braunwald is a gem. As for not skiing there is a restaurant at the end of every lift and the views are spectacular. From Gotzenbuehl you can sled down to the resort but be careful, this mode of transport is a lot more dangerous than skiing. Do go to the Hotel Bellevue for a drink or meal and meet the charming owners and also for a rough and readier experience try the Backpackers Hotel Adrenalin right in the village. Braunwald is a wonderful place, just don't tell too many people about it. I love the place.

Wow-many, many thanks for your ideas and tips. I did not realize that there were more replies! The sledding does sound a bit hazardous but my 6 year old would like to try. I am bringing a helmet for him! We are getting waterproof boots for sure. Any ideas for a one night excursion from Braunwald with the destination of Winterthur the next evening? Have a great day!
