The only thing I can remember is when you walk in the front main enterance there is a pottery shop on the left not to far up. I bought a few things there, there are a line of shops left and right with different things to buy as you walk up the road/path. We will be going back just for a quick visit while we stay in Volterra.

I found a nice one and bought some great oil and vinegar cruets (?). It was off the main street, Via San Giovanni, past the Duomo, in the next piazza. Past the Duomo, you would turn to your left and it's up a little street towards the walls. I'll look for the name and post it if I can find it.

I forgot I have had this one booked marked for the last 2-3 years www.tinacci.com which is also in San G on Via San Giovanna. Haven't bought anything online from but they have nice pottery.

Hello Jenann

I don't know where else in Italy you are visiting other than San Gimignano - but if your travels within Italy take you any further - Deruta in Umbria is one fo the best places to buy Italian pottery. Amazing choices throughout the town - many, many shops with many styles. I believe this is where much of the pottery you find in the major cities is actually made!

The service and shipping is also superb. They ship all over the world and have the process down cold! We received our purchases very timely and with no breakage.

Also - we visited during peak season and didn't find Deruta very crowded at all. I didn't compare prices to those in Siena or Florence because we went there first before heading to Tuscany - but I suspect they're better.

Depends on how far from San Gimignano you plan to travel, but the sources of much of the ceramics sold there are Deruta (Google 'deruta') and Montelupo Fiorentino (Google 'montelupo'). Although Impruneta is famous mainly for terracotta, there are artisanal factories there where you can see pots being painted and fired, and where you can buy them, of course. Greve in Chianti also has two good ceramics outlets that sell both traditional designs ('Ceramica Geometrie') and contempory creative ceramics ('Galleria Materiacrea').
