Can anyone recommend the best day trip to take? We are staying at Hotel Davanzati and have four days in Florence in November and we would like one day to tour some of the small towns outside of Florence. I know the hotel can set something up but I don't want to spend 6 hours on a tour bus/car.

Would love to hear suggestions!!

Thank you.

A tour of the main Chianti towns would be interesting taking in Greve, Castellina and Radda. However, since you are going a bit out of season a day trip out to San Gimignano or Siena would give you a chance to see them with a few less tourists. Also going to just one of these would mean less time spent driving around and more time sightseeing. Also both are easily done by public transport if you want to avoid being herded around on an organised tour.

Lucca, Lucca, Lucca! Take the bus from Florence to bus station inside the walls in Lucca. Enjoy Lucca, but do spring for a taxi to Montuolo to do lunch at Villa Bongi. (www.villabongi.it, I think). Taxi back to Lucca. Stay late enough in the afternoon for the Passegiata, then grab the bus back to Florence in time for a light supper....it's all you'll need after Villa Bongi. Enjoy.

There are great day tours to Cinque Terre about an hour and a half away. Not to be missed!
