Hi, we will spend a week in Tuscany late September. It will be our second visit, so we are going to avoid those magnets like Firenze or San Gimignano. Our plan is to enjoy rather quiter places, do some hiking (we don´t mind more days walking), see some wine harvest and not to see many tourists:-)

Our questions:

1. How is *public transport in Tuscany*? Are the buses going even to villages often or is there just one bus daily? Last time we were hitching and it was easy, but now, we are a group of four and that would make it too difficult and as 6 years older, we have become more lazy:)So we are considering renting a car or riding a buses. Both have their advanteges: we don´t want to become the "prisoners" of the car and we love to walk some parts of the trip, however, we are not very keen to spend hours waiting for the bus...

2. Tips for walking and hiking:We have walked both treks in LP Walking in Italy and trying to find other (both were really great and we think of walking these again). Any ideas for good paths and treks? We are considering Apuan Alps, but we will probably don´t want to "spoil" Tuscany countryside in our memories by this different peaks:-)

3. Untouristy places: We are about to avoid most famous tourist traps. However, we really liked those small towns in Tuscany, so we will definitely spend there some time? Any tips which are good places?

4. Wine tasting and harvest: We suppose end of September is right time to see the grape harvest and also taste some wine. Any tips which area is the most pictoresque winery? Btw, we will definitely like to taste some wines, do you have any good experience with some wineries? We are not into those with bottles of 50 euros:-)

thansk a million

I would recommend you go to Amazon and buy yourselves a copy of "Walking & Eating in Tuscany & Umbria" by James Lasdun & Pia Davis, the updated 2005 edition. Published by Penguin, ISBN number: 0-14-100900-4. I honestly cannot rate this book highly enough and I write that as someone whose former home lay just yards off one of their recommend walks. I can only comment on the walks in southern Tuscany but we bought the book perhaps ten years after first exploring the same area on our own and their advice, comments, description brought already familiar hikes even more alive. Their restaurant/where to stay recommendations too are spot on if your taste is not for tourist trap places and you're interested in staying more "en famille" than in a four star hotel. They also detail not only public transport advice but taxi company numbers! Several great walks through the major wine growing districts of southern Tuscany are covered, including a fab one from Buonconvento to Montalcino (the last stretch is a killer!) and a nice walk from Pienza/ Montepulciano.

Late September is a good time for hiking as a lot of the trails in this part of the region are unshaded and it's currently very uncomfortable, if not impossibly hot, to walk between 11 & 3. In addition to the book, when you arrive, all the local books shops/newstands sell excellent hiking maps but, to be honest, the route directions in the book are so very accurate, you could easily enjoy days of hiking without one.

Dear Catie,

thank you very much for your advice. We are really about to buy this book as we have got some very good references as well. We used LP Walking in Italy, but they have just two walks described. They are nice, but in too crowded places:)

We hope the weather will be more pleasent than beginning of June, when was our last time in Tuscany. We had to walk early mornings and late afternoon, otherwise it was killing due to high temperatures.
