Depends what you want out of the trip. If you like walking, then head for the Cinque Terre. You could get off at Monterosso and walk until you drop along the main coastal path (you need to buy a ticket - 3 €) or buy a walking map and do something a bit different, like Levanto to Monterosso or Riomaggiore to Portovenere and back by bus to La Spezia.

Decide where you will be sleeping too - City or village. If you need retail therapy obviously Genova will be best. Sunday will be closed, but you could go to the aquarium, a museum, the cemtary or just explore on foot.

It's easy to nip up and down the coast hopping on and off the train, so you could easily spend an hour or two in the many great places between Genova and La Spezia.

Don't forget to try the farinata and the focaccia con cipolle!
