From what I can tell on the Trenitalia website there is a train that goes along the coast from Genoa, changing in Pisa , to Florence. Has anyone done that? If so is it a pleasant trip?

Is it better to go to Milan and take the Eurostar to Florence?

I have used the ICPlus service along this route, then changed trains in Pisa. The other train to Florence arrived in just a few minutes on the same platform. If for some reason you miss the connection then another Regional train comes along every few minutes to Florence.

Do not go to Milan; you will waste alot of time.

I agree.

It would be a useless waste of time and money.

The route along the coast is beautiful and in manyparts offers dramatic views of the sea.

Moreover, it is not a minor route, since all the traffic to Rome via the thyrrenian side of Italy goes through this route.

Pisa station is pretty small and you can easily get your connection to florence.
