We arrive on Sunday night at (hopefully) 6.30pm and are booked in to stay at the Il Salotto di Lucilla hotel in Genoa.

It looks like the most straightforward way is for us to hang about until 8pm and get the bus that takes us direct from the airport to Genoa, unfortunatley getting us in for a very late 2300. We arrive on the 7th Sept, and it looks like the service will still be running on that day.

Or, do we get a bus into Milan train station and then get a train to Genoa? I was thinking an hour on the bus, then another 2 on the train, which is then the same as the 3 hours on the first option. And would we really get in any earlier by the time we have factored in waiting for bags and finding our way around the train station?

WHen we arrived in Milan in May, we had an hour's wait for our bags....

Also, do we have to pre-book our bus tickets?

Any thoughts appreciated. I think I've got to the stage where I'm so done researching, I can hardly make a decision!

I would suggest taking your time and catching the bus to Genoa.

An hour wait for bags at Malpensa is not unusual as is another hour to get into central Milan on the bus.

If everything is on time then you could catch the train and save one hour. However, it would be a very stressful way to start a holiday, especially if there were any delays.

The volpibus website states that the ticket must be booked on-line using their website.

http://www.volpibus.com/?

If you want to take the bus to Central Station you can buy a ticket on the bus.

www.sea-aeroportimilano.it/en/malpensa/

www.trenitalia.it – last train to Genoa is at 22:25 if there are long delays and you miss the bus.

Thanks, I think I just needed some re-assurance that the direct bus made the most sense. I suppose the only other issue is if we pre-book the bus and then miss it, we will lost over 40 euros but that may be worth the risk and we just keep our fingers crossed.

Hi, I also have to leave Genoa to catch my flight at Malpensa Milan, altho, I am staying overnight in Milan, where the hotel shuttle can transfer us to the hotel for the night. Is bus the best way to go? I think if I take the train, I still would need to take the bus to the airport. Are the fares significantly different?

When we were there on July 1, 08 we were to find a way to get to Genoa. We did not pre-purchase the volpibus tickets because I couldn't understand Italian that was used on their site. At first we wanted to take the bus to Central Station and then take the bus to Genoa but after considering our luggages we decided that we didn't want to hazzle with that and just take the volpibus. It was a little difficult to purchase the ticket because first, the lady told us to buy it on the bus. Then she told us to take the bus to central station...etc., it's faster. After telling her that we wanted to buy the tickets now if at all possible. Then she sold us the tickets and calling someone (I suppose the driver) that we will be on that certain bus. I felt that they were trying to discourage us from taking the volpibus, for some reason. Actually it turned out to be the best decision because our driver voluntarily dropped us off right at our hotel, Novotel, which saved us a taxi ride from the bus station to the hotel.

Thanks ROCruiser, I think I will also wait, see if we can get tickets on the day when we arrive (afterall, what are the chances of everyone wanting to go to Genoa ??) and if get lucky then great, if not the train it is. Looking forward to it as it's only 5 or so weeks away.

I would say that your chance of getting on the bus will be great. On our bus there were less than 10 people. Have a great trip!

Information for worldtraveler trying to get from Milan to Malpensa.

To get from Milan to Malpensa it depends where your hotel is situated relative to Central Station or Milan Cadorno station.

If you are near Central Station then it is more convenient to take the bus. There are two companies that operate from Central Station coach park, Malpensa Bus Express and Malpensa shuttle Air Pullman. Malpensa Bus Express costs €5,50 one way ( 2 every hour) and Malpensa Air Pullman €7,00 (every 20 minutes). Tickets can be purchased on the bus. The journey on either bus will take about 50 minutes.

The train leaves from Milan Cadorna every 30 minutes and takes about 40 minutes. One way ticket costs €11,00.

Thanks. I am interested in GENOA to Milan Malpensa airport. Should we take the bus or train from Genoa Principe Station? We are staying overnight in Ramada Inn Malpensa, the hotel has a free airport pickup, so there is no time constraint, only which is more convenient or cheaper.

World traveller,

We were going to get the bus from Genoa to Malpensa from a convenience point of view but the buses are only twice a day and the morning one is at 0600. A little too early for us. It would have got us into Malpensa for 9am and then we would be hanging around there for nearly 4 hours before the flight. We're getting 45 minutes more in bed, will get the train to Milan and then grab brekkie there before getting the bus. A bit more convoluted but slightly more bearable.

I guess it all depends on the time of your flight adn if the bus suits. if it does then I would go for the bus, no faffing about and changing transport.

Hope that helps you a bit.
