My boyfriend and I are going to Rome next week and booked our hotel a while back at the HOTEL BRITANNIA. I'm starting to get nervous now because its near Termini and I'm just realizing the area isn't great. They have a 72 hour cancellation policy but I don't know if we'd be able to find another hotel. Has anyone stayed there??? Its address is Via Napoli 64. It was picked as a "Fodor's Choice" for Rome and received good reviews on this website. Is the area too seedy?? Any feedback? Thanks!

I was in Italy last year on a tour and stayed on my own for a few days after the tour ended. I asked my italian guide about a hotel around Termini and he talked me out of it. He said it wasn't really seedy, but it just wasn't great either. We stayed around Via Veneto and it was great, we were right around the Borghese Park, beautiful area, not far from the american embassy and the Westin hoitel. A bit expensive but you know the saying, you get what you pay for.

While the area by Termini is not the most attractive area of town safety will not be an issue. Hotels near Termini tend to be cheaper. If you can afford to stay closer to the sights do it, but the city center is small. You already have your reservation and the hotel has good reviews.

Last time in Rome we stayed the Mecenate Palace which is close to the Termini.

We didn´t have any problems staying there, and the hotel was really great and charming and also very cheap for what we got, but this time we want to stay in Trastevera.

The best restaurants are there, and we dont want to take a taxi to get back to the hotel this time.

I'd check the reviews on Hotel King before booking. It may be close to the Spanish Steps but the reviews are not good.

Two weeks ago, we stayed right around the corner from Hotel Britannia at 66 Imperial Inn. This is on the nicer side of Termini. I was hesitant beforehand because of everything I had read, but was pleasantly surprised how clean the area is. I was concerned about safety also since we were traveling with children. There is definately a difference right outside the station, but we walked there several times and felt perfectly safe. I would go for it!

Hi BostonChick - no problem - we stayed in a street much closer to the termini station - your road doesn't even count as near the station in my opinion !!! You're close to Via Nazionale, have a wonderful fountain Fontana delle Naiadi in Piazza della Repubblica not far away, and the Teatro dell'Opera in the other direction ... if the reviews of your hotel on this site are good, then forget it - it's not a problem, just get out there and have a good time !!! We just returned from Italy and stayed at the Bellesuite Hotel on Via Modena, near Repubblica Square. We were about a 5-8 minute walk from Termini. I was a bit concerned about all the negatives concerning the Termini area but cannot figure out what all the fuss is about. Our hotel was lovely and only 115 Euros a night. We walked to Termini a number of times and never once felt unsafe or uncomfortable, day or night. The area was really nice and within easy walking distance to Via Veneto, Trevi Fountain etc. As mentioned, there is a lot of shopping on Via Nazionale. There may be areas around Termini that are considered seedier but we never encountered them. My advice - don't get all wrapped up in this stuff. If the hotel reviews are good, go with your gut. Rome seems to be a much safer city than any major North American city. Just enjoy it!
