pyrenees hiking in early October |
|
Hi, we are planning (maybe...) a 1 week hike (maybe split it to 2 with some rest between) in early October. I searched for information regarding the weather and Refugios availability during that period and found almost nothing... can someone please advise if the refugios are open in October? Is it a good time to spend in the mountains? is it possible to use public trans. in this area? thanx, E |

You'll find most of what you're seeking on the following website: http://www.cataloniapyrenees.com/ Note: the site is currently experiencing some problems. The trains do not run into the Pyrenees, but you can go to Vic and pick up a rental car.

Trains run on from Vic up to the Pyrenees. You can go to Ribes de Freser and then go by rack-railway to Nura for example. Trains normally run on up to Puigcerda but there is major work at that end at the moment (not sure of situation in October). I once went by train to Ripoll (same line and also currently running) and then got bus to Camprodon. Weather is difficult to predict. I think occasionally there are early snowfalls in October but nothing that lasts.

Sorry, that should have been "Nuria" not Nura. The other way to the Catalan Pyrenees by train would be via Lleida/Lérida (train from there to La Pobla de Segur)

Hello, We likewise are planning to hike the route of the harvesters around October 20. The prat de Aguilio looks to be "unguarded" at that date. I believe that we will still be able to get in to spend the night at that time of year, but I have a couple of questions regarding water and sleeping bags. Will we need to bring enough water for two days, or can we hopefully find water at the refuge. Also, do we need to just bring a sheet, or will we have to bring a sleeping bag ? thanks in advance for any help, Richard

hi, lots of the refugis in catalan pyrinees are managed by the "federeació d'entitats excursionistes de catalunya", they have a website in catalan and with a little information traslated in english, but I suggested you send a email asking for information: feec@feec.cat and probably they can give information directtly!!
|
Good idea, and thank you for the suggestion. I have e-mailed them at that address. I'll post what I find.
