San Sebastian Restaurants |

We are staying in San Sebastian for 6 nights at the end of August. We have booked Akelarre on 1 night and were considering Arzak for the other but the price at €140 each plus wine is a touch expensive. What we were looking for is perhaps €100 each to include wine. My questions are: 1.Is Arzac worth a visit despite the price and are there cheaper options available at Arzac 2. How good is Akelarre? 3. What other options are there please? Many thanks |

I had my doubts about Arzak but it really is worth it. HOWEVER, only if you can afford it. I wouldn't make a sacrifice to go. It doesn't get any cheaper than €140 or so. Most restaurants in San Sebastian are very good restaurants and, to be honest, my favorite places happen to be the outdoor restaurants right along the port. I am not sure about Akelarre as I have never been there. Other good places where I have eaten and would recommend include Casa Urola, La Fabrica, Bernardo Etxea, Gandarias, La Viña, and Pollitena, all in the Parte Vieja, and Hika Mika in El Centro. There are many, many more, some mentioned in previous posts. And I suppose you already have plans for it, but be sure to make time for pintxos.

Arzak has been at the top of the list for a number of years because it is very good, but I'm not a fan of some of the dishes Elaina offers. I personally consider Pedro Subijana of Alelarre to be one of the top Basque chefs working today, but like Arzak, one of the most expensive places to dine. Another great Basque chef in San Sebastian-Donostia is Daniel Lopez, owner of Kokotxa, in the Casco Viejo. He has only been open for 6 years and received his first Michelin star in March, reading about it in the paper. But as already noted, there are dozens of great restaurants in Donostia, including one of our favorites for classic Basque cuisine, Casa Nicolasa, who's prices are much easier on the pocketbook. All of the above are Eurotoque chefs.
