Would we get bored in Seville for 9 nights? |
|
Help me out here. Two men (gay) flying into Malaga from Yorkshire from 17th-27th September. We don't really fancy the usual Costa del Sol and are looking to travel up to Seville. If we spent most of our time based in Seville (i.e. spend first and last night in Malaga) would we get bored? Neither of us drive nor do we speak Spanish. Is this too long for the city? Ideally we would like somewhere with a sun terrace or a pool but we don't have money to flash around (the credit crunch!) Suggestions on the time we should really spend in Seville are much appreciated. Or any suggestions on a more varied plan..basically we don't know of anywhere along the Costa del Sol other than the usual places where all the Brits hang out en masse. Any comments very much appreciated....thank you |

I will assume that you can sort out the 'tourist' things elsewhere on this or another site. Gay wise Malaga has a small scene centred round the Plaza de la Merced (Picaso's birth house is there) and the city is worth a couple of days at least. Malaga's gay scene as such is really in Torremolinos so the bars and clubs of Malaga are few and very Spanish but I am told very good. Seville is Spain's fourth largest city and has a pretty good bar/club/sauna set up (and is terrific for tourism). Addresses and directions are freely available on gay sites on the net. Remember that absolutely nothing gets going before midnight and then goes on to late the following morning. Last sunday I was having a coffee in La Nogalera square and they were still going in to Voltage at 2 in the afternoon. This means that although Seville has good, fast and cheap transport links to Cadiz, Jerez and Cordoba you can't do much that's gay centred. In both Malaga and Seville there some coffee bars with a good gay following around Plaza de la Merced and Alameda de Hercules but life here is pretty laid back and nobody is going to worry overmuch although a deepthroat kiss might be frowned upon! The main gay organisation for Andulusia is Colega and the main free (in Spanish) paper with ads and info is Shangay. Even if you can't speak Spanish you can follow a lot of the info. My ISP is ya.com and they list chueca.com as their gay information pages. Most are paid for but some are free and there some nice pics!

Thanks for the message. Crossed wires here as we aren't interested in doing anything on the gay scene...we just want to know if we owuld get bored in general or should we be doing different places whilst in Andalusia

We are not gay and we are OLD!!! Several years ago, we did spend 9 nights in Seville, and we LOVED it! It is a charming city. There is so much to see. We did not drive either. We took the train to Cordoba one day. Fabulous. We took a tour to Granada one day. Also fabulous. We did not go on our own because we thought getting tickets to the Alhambra may be an issue. We also took a tour to Jerez (saw the horse show and visited a sherry bodega). You will not be bored. Go and enoy! I will check to see if you have any questions.

hehe...your message made me really smile! It's just that staying for so long in a city which isn't by the sea or a harbour can sometimes get boring. So any suggestions on accomodation would be very grateful..I know nothing about the city! Rob

Rob, If you're staying in Sevilla for 9 nights I'd seriously look at renting an apartment rather than staying in a hotel. Then you can eat in some days, Sevilla is full of great restaurants but they aren't cheap. We always do this as you get much better value for money all round. As mentioned before, Córdoba is a good day out (very quick by train), you could also do a day out to Cádiz, Jerez etc. easily by train. Good beach and sea at Cádiz if you feel the need to escape the city heat, Sevilla is always very, very HOT!

Never thought of renting an apartment...good idea....now where do I start looking though!

I think that you can see everything in Seville in 4 days. You could go to Cadiz after that because there are few tourists who go there, and there are few English. The Playa Victoria is a wonderful place to stay. Look for my trip report on the Cadiz forum.

Rob, www.niumba.com is always best for city apartments, don't worry - it has an English version. 544 to choose from in Sevilla!

Well I did say you'd get plenty of non gay advice. Your nine days included two in Malaga but they seemed to be 'waiting for the plane' type days rather than a full enjoyment of the city. Malaga and Granada are both cities worth staying in rather than tripping from Seville like Cadiz, Jerez and Cordoba. Anyway even if you don't have a coffee and watch the world in the Plaza de la merced have a great stay

Thanks everyone for your comments. I've booked an apartment via Niumba and am now looking at all the day trips I can do from Seville. Thanks again!
