I posted this question on the Monchengladbach site but thought I might have better luck here..

Anyway, our family will be travelling over to Mgladbach from New Zealand in two weeks and would like some advice on where to eat with a family. This includes Dusseldorf.

We are staying in a hotel in Mgladbach so need some reasonably priced places to eat for lunch and dinner.

Also, how important is it to speak German. I'm extremely limited in this area and do not want to offend anyone?

Since I do not have any kids I am not very familiar with special places to eat. There will be plenty of fastfood places to start with...

Anyway, don't worry too much abut getting around: the Germans speak English quite well and be happy to help.

The public transportation will get you around easily in case you do not have a car.

You will probably already be in Monchengladbach, but perhaps you will read this anyway.

If your expectations toward the quality of the food is not too high, I recommend to try the restaurants in the big department stores. Each big department store, such as Karstadt, Hertie or Kaufhof has a restaurant. They are self-serving restaurants and you can eat there everything from breakfast items to hot supper. They are not really cheap, but not overly expensive either. The good thing is that you just need to point to the food and don't need to speak much.

Apart from this, there are many "ethnic" restaurants, such as Greek, Italian or Chinese which are always very child-friendly.

Most Germans speak at least a little English, though will propably have problems to understand your New Zealand accent. So better keep your sentences short and speak slowly.

Have fun.
