All hotels at the city centre are very, very expensieve. But it's no problem to take the Tram or the underground to the city centre, it takes at maximum 10-15 minutes.

It's safe for children. It's better to visit the market before evening, because most people go to the market then. The market in Duesseldorf is not really big, you should take the S1 train to Essen (30 minutes from Duesseldorf main station). There's a really big market near the main station and through the whole city centre, and also with a lot of stuff for kids like a Big Wheel and caroussels. There you should go when it's getting dark, because Essen presents every year the "Lightweeks" with different country themes every year. Here's a Link (also in English)

Hi

I am also going to the Christmas markets in December. I was in Dusseldorf during June and this time I have booked the Best Western Savoy using www.booking.com. I got a really good deal for the dates we are going and I know this hotel is in easy walking distance of the Konnigsalle and the old town.

Hope this helps
