Wine in beer country? |
Any of you local experts an expert on wine? I'll be LIVING IN THE CITY FOR 1 MONTH, and I need my German winefix. ANY HOTELS/RESTAURANTS/BARS That sell wine from quality winemakers like fritz haag, donnhoff, kunstler, karthauserhofberg, dr. heger---and/or any weinhandlung where I can buy and drink in my room?
THANKS VERY MUCH.

Most big supermarkets will have a reasonable offer on good German wines. It may be "beer country" but Düsseldorf is as "posh" as a city can be :-)

You will find plenty of quality German wine in the bars of the Altstadt and the restaurants in Düsseldorf. As far as buying wine for drinking in your room, all of the supermarkets will have quality bottles of German wine for sale. If that is not on your level you will find dozens of posh shops in Düsseldorf that sell high end items. Düsseldorf is luxury in a word.

>all of the supermarkets will have quality No, guys, not at the level of the winemakers listed by madfish8. A locally owned, specialized wine store will be your best bet. Unfortunately I'm not familiar enough with the city to know local wine specialists. You'll find addresses in the yellow pages phone book looking up "Weinhandlung". You can also check the business phone register online at http://www.gelbeseiten.de: Was: "Weinhandlung" Wo: "Duesseldorf" Among the chains, there is first of all Jacques' Wein-Depot, a franchise chain of wine stores. Their focus is more on French, Spanish, Italian and overseas wines, but they also have some German wines, and trained staff who know perfectly well what they are selling. Advantage: You can try any wine in the store before you buy it. Karstadt department stores usually have an ok assortment of wines in the food department, you may be lucky there.

Thanks guys for the replies, and special thanks to blandineforberg for the very specific information. Any "Dusseldorf experts" out there who can help further? thanks.
Look out for the excellent Mosel wines:
Thank you hiker from luxembourg,; I think you can see that I already KNOW about the WINES from the Mosel, however the question was where can I buy them In Dusseldorf?! Thanks anyway.
Ehm, madfish8, it seems you know more about wines then I do but don't worry once you are in Duesseldorf I am confident you will sniff out the right places.
Hi Hiker, Sorry if I upset you, I don't mean to seem ungrateful but I spent loads of time on the net yesterday and was only able to come up with 2 restaurants (both horribly expensive and french) serving these wines; it seems that french and italian wines are a lot more popular in this city than for instance the Mosel, Rhine and Baden regions where I normally spend my time. Looks like I'll just have to trawl around the city for a few days!!! Thanks anyway.
I am not upset, living on the Mosel I thought I might advertise a bit. Will be in Cologne tomorrow and will open my eyes and ears on the wine subject.
Hiker that's great, thanks! To make it easier just look for the outlets who sell wine from German winemakers who are in the "V.D.P.", these are the "elite" winemakers, Thanks again.
