Hi!

I am visiting Berlin with my 83-year-old mother. We are arriving at Berlin Tegel Airport and staying at the Derag Hotel and Living Hotel Henriette near museum island. What is the best way to get to our hotel from the airport? I have seen the online site for an airport shuttle that I can book in advance for about €19. Is the shuttle a good choice for an elderly person?

Also, we would appreciate any advice for getting around to see the sights with limited walking or renting a wheelchair if necessary.

Thanks!

Hello from Berlin,

a taxi would be 25.00 - 30.00 EURO. The central taxi stand is just maybe 300 feet form your gate in the inner circle of the airport.

Probably the most convinient and trustworthy way.

Enjoy your stay

Hi, if the weather is o.k., a very good way to get around is the hop-on-hop-off-Bus (on top). In front of "Brandenburger Tor" there are several other interesting and charming possibilities of getting around like on a Riksha (with a bycicle-man driving and talking) or with a slade of husky-dogs (also manageable for your mother, I think), Have a nice time.

Thanks for all the info. and advice! We will get a taxi from the airport.

As for touring info.--What is the husky dog thing? Also, does the hop on hop off bus have many steps? My elderly mother can only climb a few steps at a time.

I read in a tour guide book that the S-Bahn and the U-Bahn have elevators, but a friend told me that is not true.

Hi travelsw, the husky-dog-thing is a sleigh on wheels with dogs to carry! But I don't know if they will be there (Pariser Platz/Brandenburger Tor) every time. The rikshas are all over the centre of town, especially Pariser Platz. Nice to drive with. In the hop-on-hop-off- bus you will have a spiral narrow but short staircase up, perhaps a problem. But you can stay downstairs and listen to the explanations with the earphone.

How I understood, your mother doesn't need a wheelchair, so forget about that, elderly people often don't like to be treated older than they really feel or are, what I can understand very well.

Berlin is very spread, so such a tourist-bus-thing is the best idea for elder (and for all) new visitors. - What also is really beautiful (good weather needed) and very popular: the "Sanssoucis"-castle in Potsdam, which is the main city of Brandenburg. Berlin is surrounded by Brandenburg and Potsdam is very near, you cross the "spy-bridge" in Berlin-Wannsee and you are in Potsdam. - It is not at all difficult to go on a boat for a tour which is very nice, too. There are several different ones.

Thanks, Berlino!

We will certainly look for the husky dogs. I usually travel with at least one of my dogs and will be missing them very much while in Berlin.

I plan to book a river cruise and tour to Potsdam. Is it safe to do so on the Berlin Tours website? Also I read about the Insider tours. Are the Insider tours all walking? Would an elderly person be able to keep up (my mother can shop for hours as long as she can rest often).

Thanks again!

Insider Tour is either walking or bike. I am not so sure that it is possible for your mother - the gorup stops every few minutes for explanations, and some of these places also have benches, but not all of them - in some cases she will have to stand.

I have mentioned before, that there are options to rent a wheelchair, and of course if you take it, I think that at least their "Famous Walk" is wheelchair friendly.
