Where is there great souvenir shopping in Berlin? |
|
We will be in Berlin in October for a couple days and want to hit the areas with good souvenirs to shop/buy? Can you pls tell me exactly where we should go? What kind of shops are at the Fiederichstrasse and Gendarmenmarkt Plaza? Any souvenir shopping there? Thanks! Arleen |

There are souvenir shops all over Berlin. Many are concentrated in Unter den Linden after the crossroads with Friedrichstrasse; you will find plenty in Checkpoint Charlie area (which is on Friedrichstrasse - it is a long street); near the Memorial Church in KuDamm ; and maybe also in other places. The Gendarmenmarkt may be too classy/expensive for souvenir shops, although for example the famous Fassbender & Rausch chocoletier is probably a great place to get souvenirs; probably also Galerie Lafayette if you're from America and have expensive taste. Some recommended souvenir shops: * The Berlin Story bookstore, which is dedicated to Berlin, on Unter den Linden, one block after the crossroads with Friedrichstrasse, sells many souvenirs as well; * If you buy the Berlin Welcome Card, you can get discount at the BER LIN souvenir shops. There is a one in the Dom Aquaree and another one in the Alexa shopping centre, and probably many more elsewhere. * If you're short on the money, try the thrift shops! (you know - all in $1 or in fact EUR 1). That's right... Basically they naturally cater to the Berliners, but they have some stuff that would fit as a souvenir.

A souvenir I like is the "Ampelmann" featuring the figures which appeared on pedestrian crossings in East Germany and have been maintained in Berlin. Fatter than the other European versions, and wearing a hat. Dedicated "Ampelmann" shops eg near the Dom Aquaree, in Hackesche Höfe, in Potsdamer Arkaden but in fact you can buy souvenirs with the symbol in lots of other places such as Galeria Kaufhof in Alexanderplatz (bags, bottle-openers, mouse-pads plus T-shirts etc). Friedrichstrasse has a couple of shops selling products from the Erzgebirge (wooodcarvings, pottery and textiles). One is near Friedrichstrasse station. By this stage, 19 years after the fall of the Wall, I'd have some doubtas to how genuine those pieces are.

Hi, there is a shop very near to Hotel Adlon (Pariser Platz/Brandenburger Tor) on "Unter den Linden". Better: In a very old and interesting building called "Deutsches Historisches Museum" (which means German historic museum), also situated "Unter den Linden" in front of the old opera ("Staatsoper") and not far from our most beautiful cathedral ("Dom") you can find some not so awful kitschy but real nice things like for example very small hurdy-gurdys with famous songs of old Berlin. (in the museum-shop). Hope, the weather will be with you, have a nice time.

Thanks guys, although I don't want to buy anything expensive...just the typical American souvenirs like t-shirts w/ Berlin on them, little trinkets, typical Berlin Xmas ornaments, etc. I've been to the Galeries Lafayette in I think London and Paris and they don't really offer souvenirs and are expensive. I'm looking more for the real souvenir shops. Thanks.
