I'm going to be spending a weekend in Munich at the end of July with my boyfriend and i'm looking for suggestions on things to do and see. Also any info on nice reasonably priced places to stay/eat would be appreciate.

Many thanks

The best location is in the historic centre near Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt.

The Accorhotels Group has some very reasonable prices, if you're lucky special offers are still available:

http://www.accorhotels.com

My recommendations, Mercure Hotel Muenchen (3 star) Altstadt, very near Marienplatz:

The Novotel Muenchen City (4 star) is also very nice and only 15 minutes on foot or 2 stops (5 minutes) away from the historic centre:

the trypmuenchen hotel is on hotels.com, we were in munich a few weeks ago and one of our group insisted on a hotel he had heard of close to central station so we booked it, even though the tryp had a better deal, when we were out and about i seen the tryp about 5 doors up it seemed like a nice hotel.the hotel we stayed in was the art hotel ,very clean ,and quiet .continental breakfast was fantastic, only downside is no real bar but there is a few on the street.if it is the 24 to 27 your going, the tryp is 230 euro for 3 nights, an the art is 270 for the same.either one is very convenient to the( hauptbahnnhof) central station, which is handy for back and forward to the airport.need any info about getting back and forward just ask.

The train from the airport stops at all the usual stops along the route, there is no express train just between the central train station and the airport. So "any" stop along the route is just as convenient for the trip from/to the airport.

Stops along airport train route, see line S8:

Both hotels I recommended above are located at airport stops (Marienplatz, Rosenheimer Platz).

Thanks a million for the tips Panda74 - i've gone with the Novotel Muenchen City (4 star) as bizarrely it's much cheaper than the other hotel you recommended :-)

Hopefully we have a nice weekend now!

Don't forget to stroll over the Viktualienmarkt on Saturday (S-Bahn stop Marienplatz) and eat some goodies.

On Sunday everything in Munich except museums and cafés will be closed, so if musueums are your thing you could visit the Pinakotheken (one for classic art, one for 20th century and one for modern art). Sunday admission is only 1€ to each.

nearest metro station: Königsplatz or Odeonsplatz, or take the S-bahn 3 stops to Karlsplatz, then change to the tram no. 27 in the direction "Petuelring" and get off at stop "Alte Pinakothek". All the Pinakotheken are next to each other.

Gallery Hours

Daily except MON 10.00 - 18.00

TUE 10.00 - 20.00

Or you could take a trip to one of King Ludwig's castles. Herrenchiemsee (located on an island in lake Chiemsee) is a copy of Versailles and Neuschwanstein is the famous fairy tale castle.

Visiting both in one day is not possible so you would have to choose. Just put in Herrenchiemsee or Neuschwanstein in the search box for this forum and you'll get loads of information on how to get there.

Thanks for all the really useful information Panda74

One more question since you seem to be the Munich guru - where is the best place to go for schnitzel? Whenever i go to Germany i have to get schnitzel :-)

Best Schnitzel in Munich: about 18€ for a delicious and enormous Schnitzel with fried potatoes at Kaisergarten, right in the middle of Schwabing (has a beer garden too):

Take any S-Bahn to Marienplatz, then take metro U3 to Münchner Freiheit and from there walk about 450m.

Ich Liebe der KaiserGarten!

I have only been there once, in 2004, I think... I love their food & atmosphere!

Great name too!
