I would like to know which local banks (LBBW, Volksbank, etc) charges the lowest fees for foreign customers. I have heard that the ATM's charge around 4.50 euro plus my own bank in the U.S. will add $5.00. I am trying to keep the fees low and would appreciate it if someone could help me out with this information. Thanks!

Why don't you contact your US bank to see which banks it is associated with in Germany and will not have any extra fees. I believe that most extra charges will arise from the US side.

Thank you for the quick reply. I think you are correct. I checked by balance online and only noticed a $5.00 fee from my U.S. Bank. I didn't see a charge yet from Volksbank. I'll post another reply if one shows up on my account. Danke.

To my information only your bank charges you for ATM use.

Typically it reads on German ATMs:

Just for your information: "We charge our customers if they use a 3rd party ATM a fee of EUR x,xx per transaction."

a) fee for ATM use

A fixed amount or something like x % but at minimum the amount of y.

Inside the same network or with partner banks you may have not to pay this fee at all. I think Bank of America has such an agreement with Deutsche Bank.

b) fee for currency conversion

If the middle rate is used for this the bank will add a percentage or again a combination of percentage and minimum amount for the currency conversion. This is however normally the cheapest way of cash currency conversion you have access to as a normal citizen.

If you get a Bank of America checking account, you can use their partner Deutsche Bank's ATMs in Germany with no fees. There are a ton of DB's in Germany and several in Stuttgart.
