Hi, is Carentan worth visiting? What does it offer?! Many shops/restaurants/cafes?

Thanks

This depends, to some degree, on your interests. If you're looking into Carentan as part of a battle of Normandy itinerary, than it is certainly worth a visit - an important aspect to the campaign. If you're thinking more like general tourism, it does not have quite so much to offer.

Don't get me wrong, I like Carentan and have stayed there several times as a base to explore Normandy from. It is nice enough, but does not possess the sorts of sites that would be a big draw for tourists. There are some shops and cafes, but nothing really exceptional.

It's a nice stop over if you're travelling between Utah and Omaha beaches, not nearly so crowded as St Mere Eglise gets.

I have to agree with the other comments though.

L'Escapade is a nice restaurant.

You will find an interesting church surrounded by a few picturesque streets. Not much to recommend for restaurants/cafes/shops, unless you're there for the Monday morning market.

we live 8 kms from Carentan. It has a port, with the canal connecting out to Utah Beach, very old church, cobbled streets, market on a Monday... it's an old pretty market town that saw a lot of action in 1944.

Carentan is down in the marshes where 5 rivers meet - so in the winter we flood all around the area - quite spectacular , then in the summer the lush grass is grazed by Normandy cows and horses that are bred, trained and raced, trotting is very big here.

The reason Carentan is here is Ste Marie du Mont the village of Utah Beach used to be the main town of the area, however it was raided so many times by the Vikings the people fled into the marshes to hide, gradually Carentan was built and developed.

The Romans have also left their mark in Carentan.

Dead Man's Corner museum well worth a visit with Colonel Winters uniform on show and very informative films, is just outside the town and is responsible to bringing to life many of the battle sites, the Cabbage Patch is already marked and soon the last bayonet charge of the 2nd world war will have a commemoration.

As well as that there is Pont Douve the HQ for The Cotentin and Bessin Parc Naturel virtually next door to Dead Man's Corner museum. You can take a boat trip along the rivers to see all the bird life. We have a colony of Storks nesting here.

Restaurants and shops are plentiful, no Michelin stars I'm afraid!

It depends if you are a band of brother enthusiast.

If you have a day to visit the area see St Mere Eglise, Utah, Point du Hoc, Omaha beach. I rarely take people there on a day trip there's too much else to see.
