Hi,

I will be staying in Bayeux at the end of the month and would like to visit the above. I do not drive so would like to know if I can go there by bus/train. I do not want to go on an organised tour as I like to explore at my own pace. Also are any of the invasion beaches within reasonable walking distance of Bayeux?

Any information greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Forget about walking to the beaches, unless you're planning a very long stay. From Bayeux, the Bus Verts (Public transportation service in the Calvados) will take you to the beaches, both toward Omaha and the British beaches. To get to Merville, you may have to change buses in Caen or Ouistreham. Check the schedule at http://www.busverts.fr/_hiver/

But you could hire a bike in Bayeux and Arromanches and Gold beach is only 9km away.

If you want to do it at your own pace hire a car and an audio guide. If you don't want to hire a car take a tour. If you cant get over to Normandy often don't waste your trip messing about with highly impractical public transport (you still wont be at your own pace). You'll either have to come back again to visit all the things you missed or just miss them.
