Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone has found a good half day or full day Mont Saint Michel tour? While I'm sure any minivan or bus tour will take us there right in the height of tourist time, I also think it might be easier for us to see all of the key highlights if we go this route rather than trying to get the train in the morning and then the buss. I have 3 days in Bayeux, one full day for a D-Day tour (already reserved) 1 day I want to see the town, so that leaves 1 day for Mont St Michel. If anyone's done something similar, I'd love advice.

Many thanks!

Amy

You can use the Churchill Shuttle from Bayeux to Mont St Michel that leaves from Place de quebec every morning at 9 and is back at 3 pm at a cost of 55 euros per person. To book contact info@hotel-churchill.fr

I have only been to MSM once and that as a day trip from Paris by TGV. I enjoyed MSM but 1/2 day is enough. We didn't have that option with Paris as "home base". But to go again, I'd have a rental car and go see what I want and then on to something else. We actually ended up waiting on our bus for almost 2 hours at the gate of MSM. Not how I like spending precious vacation hours.

55 euros works out to about $85 US each...for a mom and 2 kids that is $255!!! I will have to find a different way to get there - or we might have to pass on it. That is just too much money for me. :-(

We have the exact schedule planned for Jul. My 16 year old son and I are leaving in two weeks. Any feedback to share on the three days in Bayeux? Thank you.

Nels....We took the very convenient Churchill shuttle to MSM. It dropped us off right by the entrance. There was enough time to take the picturesque ramparts walk up to the Abbey, tour the abbey, and then have lunch.

(We were not interested in any of the numerous stores on the main street for souvenir shopping.)

This schedule left us enough time in the afternoon to visit the Bayeux tapestry and the Bayeux Cathedral.

By the way, if you eat at MSM, many of the restaurants are quite expensive because of the location. However, you can find a few budget options which offer salads and crepes. Read the menus posted outside the restaurants so that you know the price ranges.

You will find 1/2 day plenty. Went there last year from Normandy. The view of MSM is beautiful. When you get there, you will find many tourists and "tourist junk" shops. See it, it is beautiful-- then go somewhere else. It is one of those places, I am glad I saw, and was happy to leave! The beaches and cemetary of Normandy are much more worthwhile!

All great info. We are staying at the Churchhill in Bayeux and taking their shuttle to MSM. Three hours scheduled; sounds like just the right amount of time. Any issues with the trains back and forth to Paris? I elected to buy a flex 2nd class ticket.

I too am planing on about 3 hours, on a Tuesday morning in August. I plan to get there early so we can beat the crowds. I've rented a car in Bayeux for a day, so we don't have to rely on the rather expensive shuttle, and we can keep our own schedule. I've not purchased our train tickets yet, but plan to do so tomorrow, so I'd be interested in other's experiences as well.

I agree with queeni traveller's comments.

You will love the Churchill and Madame Hebert.

When you get to MSM....take the ramparts walk up to the top...don't bother with the main street and all the touristy shops.

To find the ramparts walk...you go through the main entrance. After you cross over a very short wooden bridge, start looking for a set of steps on your right that will take you up to the top. There is lots of great picture taking on that route.

What's your thoughts on the Tapestry? A few postings say two hours. My real question is more..is it worth a visit at all or would a trip to one of the D-Day museums be better spent for a father/son, WWII history geek tour?
