Hi everyone,

My brother and I are planning on renting a car in Paris and driving around the region of Alsace and Lorraine for 2 days, until Strasbourg.

I need some advice on car rental companies and what kind of insurance we should get. We're travelling on a tight budget, so we appreciate any tips you may have concerning this subject.

Appreciate your help!

Best Regards,

Ana Beatriz

Main car hire companies you will find at most places are Hertz, Sixt, Europcar. You can check their websites to see the best deals depending on offers etc.

It may be worth checking whether it's better to drop the car off at Strasbourg Airport instead of in the city. Often the car hire places in the city are closed most of the weekend, but also if you get rid of the car before going to the city you may save 1 day or half a day of hire charges and parking fees. You can easily get to the city and everywhere around Strasbourg using trams and buses.

I would get full insurance, because if you are on a budget and damage the car for say 500 euros, then you've lost all your spare holiday money. If the car is coming from Paris it will be easily identifiable as a tourist car due to the licence plates being numbered by region, so you are more of a target (although France is pretty safe apart from the odd neighbourhood).

One thing to look out for is the fuel option - always take the choice to return the car with a full tank, because otherwise you pay way over the normal price to return the car half full.

Hi Jon,

Thank you very much for your reply. I'm probably gonna get the full insurance, it's better to be safe than sorry! :)

Best regards,

Ana
