My daughter will be moving in September to Strasbourg for studying. We are from Cyprus (EU citizens. Any information on the following will be greatly appreciated:

- we will need a laptop computer. Where can we get one from a reliable and not overly expencive shop?

- we will need a mobile phone and local connection. Any suggestions?

- Any possible information on medical coverage and insuaranse?

Thanks

For the laptop I have 2 suggestions. I normally get my electrical stuff from DARTY - they deliver free if you order on the web and have a large network of stores and good service. Check prices on www.darty.com. An alternative in Strasbourg is Surcouf which has a lot of choice in it's Strasbourg store - www.surcouf.fr. As the store is in a huge shoppping mall she can spend any savings on some new shoes ;-)

Like all mobile phones it depends what features you want (lot's of texts, international or local calls etc) as to what's best. The major networks are pretty reliable - I have Orange and am happy enough. If your daughter needs an internet connection most companies offer unlimited landline telephony in a bundle with the web connection for around 30 euro a month.

I believe your daughter will have basic health insurance as a registered student but she should take out "complementary" insurance. Normally the state pays only a proportion of the costs of drugs or doctors bills and the idea of complementary insurance is to cover the rest. The university or college will probably have a group scheme giving a good price. Anyway the best thing is to follow the university advice regarding healthcare, registration, which clinic etc as all the people they use will be used to dealing with students.
