I will be in Strasbourg for 4 nights in September between travel in Germany. I have booked a brewery tour but need suggestions on other fun things. I will not have a car but plan to take the train to Colmar for a day. I love food, wine and cooking so looking for ideas. Any cooking classes in Strasbourg?

Thanks for your suggestions!

Colmar is a lovely city - the vineyards nearby may well be mid-harvest when you are there.

Strasbourg is full of winstubs ... (wine bar/bistros).

You might be in luck with cooking classes. The wine/travel writer for my guides on Alsace, who is based out there recommends the following person:

Christiane Bisch et sa cuisine

Address: 22 Rue Baldner, 67100 Strasbourg-Neudorf

Tel: 03 88 44 29 23 or 03 88 79 04 03

Small, informal cooking classes/demonstrations in a southern suburb of Strasbourg from self-taught cook Christiane Bisch, who has worked in many of Alsace's top restaurants. Foie gras sessions around Christmas, when you get to prepare and take home your own terrine.

Unfortunately there is no website, but I would try phoning - she almost certainly will speak English.

I also found this French website with lists of restaurants and other private ventures that do classes - covering the whole of Alsace.

If you're in Strasbourg, you can very easily to a day trip to Saverne (west of Strasbourg) by train. It's a very cute city, less touristic than strasbourg but just as charming, with it's castle, cute pedestrian center, the canal, very nice restaurants and cute little shops. There are also shops to discover Alsacian wine, beers from regional microbreweries and other regional specialty. If you want to get out of the town, you can also easily just follow the canal and walk straight into the forest covered hills of the north Vosges.
