Husband and I will be in Killarney for a Saturday afternoon and full Sunday...this weekend!! We heard that we should take a bus tour of the Ring of Kerry (they operate on Sundays?) but I've been reading posts about the Gap of Dunloe and the beautiful lakes. Any recommendations of which is the better time spent between the two? What about pricing, length of tour and what it includes?

Many thanks in advance!

The ring of Kerry does not some exceptional sights and views. It takes you to more places than the Gap of Dunloe. At the Gap of Dunloe you can have a choice of visting the gift shop and restaurant and go home or go on a walking or jaunting car ride of the Gap of Dunloe.

It is not recommened to drive the Gap of Dunloe on account of the extremely tight roads. You cannot pass a jaunting car and they will NOT move for you.

You can do both by the sounds of it. If you have a car, drive to the Gap of Dunloe, park up and pay for a jaunting car ride. Do not get a jaunting car before the visitor centre(they are not regulated). Wait until you reach the car park and go to the little ridge past the visitor area.

You can then have a tour of the Ring of Kerry the next day.

I am going to be driving the ring of Kerry myself on Wednesday but unfortunately for me It will be all work work work.

Nevertheless I will be bringing my digital camera as usual just in case I get one of those perfect imgages like the sun shining through a cloud onto a lake when the rest of the area is dark.

Do both if you can. The Gap will only take around 2 hours.

The day we arrive in Killarney, we'll be coming from Blarney (after visiting the castle in the morning). After checking in at our lodging in Killarney, would we have time to visit the Gap and the Muckross House? And if only time for one...if we are doing the ROK the next day, which is the better time spent between Gap and Muckross?

Again, I realize this is all subjective to the person who responds, but it's still helpful and we've basically designed our trip by the recommendations of others! Thanks again!

Muckross house is nearer to Killarney. Its around 5-10 minutes drive from the International hotel.

The Gap of Dunloe is around 30 minutes, give or take.

If you leave Blarney in the morning, with the bypass and all its around 1 hour and 20 minutes. Blarney will probably take all of an hour at this time of year.

walk up, bend(break) your back and kiss the stone to get the "gift of the gab". Visit the Blarney Wollen Mills(Original Store) and head across to Killarney.

You could still do Blarney, Muckross and the Gap of Dunloe. Its getting dark about 6:30pm currently.

Yes, Travelbeans, quite do-able and should fill your day nicely. Then Ring next day. It's quite easy to drive if you're used to driving by now. Then you can stop where you want for those hundreds of pictures!

Contact Dero's tours before you travel to see if they are running their Ring of Kerry Tour on a Sunday. You will see from the site, it takes a full day. www.derostours.com/

The Gap of Dunloe is beautiful, but if you only have an afternoon, my choice would be to head over to Muckross Gardens, then walk through the grounds by the lakeside. There is a lovely restaurant in Muckross Visitor centre and there are some marvellous lakeside walks.

True, if you have the least interest in flora the gardens are great. Many, many species, not normally grown in Ireland, or even this part of the world, are there. Wonderous and beautiful.
