Is Staying in Killarney geeky? What, with Rick Steves saying it is and all. It's just that were 2 gals not driving (my 2nd time to Ireland her 1st) thought we could take a few day tours with the local tour companys. But if it's like Disneyland parking lot forget it. But if it's like Galway, then right on! Were comming by train from Kilkenny so any any feedback is super.

"Is Staying in Killarney geeky?"

Funny lady, I've not heard it described like that before, good one though and yes should start a nice debate going.

I don't think you could describe it as geeky, one of the descriptions of geek in the dictionary is "a peculiar or otherwise dislikable person, esp. one who is perceived to be overly intellectual." I don't think you will be perceived as that, if you stayed in Killarney, probably quite the opposite in fact ;-))

It's not like a Disneyland parking lot. (Ok, so I've only been to EuroDisney, but that has a parking lot too, and Killarney is not like that !!)

To me, Killarney is a very touristy place. But I really like any day trips I take there for that reason. Always a buzz there because of it. That of course, might be why visitors from other countries might be turned off by it.

It's not like Galway city really, it's smaller and has lakes where Galway city has the sea.

I think you should go there especially for the day tours that you mention. It is a great base for lots of wonderful places. Ring of Kerry, Gap of Dunloe, Dingle Peninsula, Beara Peninsula, Lakes of Killarney, and of course you have the town itself not to mention the beautiful Muckross House, Gardens and Torc Waterfall which are only a mile from there.

So yes, my vote is to go for it.

By the way, I wish we had a Disneyland somewhere here, it would be great fun and would do wonders for our economy ;-)))

Isn't Rick Steves (just) a little bit of a geek?

Not that that would make him any better in the know for recognising geeky places.

Kilkenny to Killarney by train? 5 to 7 hours travelling - via Dublin and Mallow, 2 changes? There has to be a better way. Bus is also 5 hours, going via Cork, but maybe you could take a day in Cork - Blarney perhaps - to break the trip up a bit.

Throw his book in the bin!!

Nobody seems to think this guys 'advice' amounts to a hill of Beans, so dispose of,quickly!!

Everyones experiences are different and Killarney would not be by far my favourite haunt but it has its own charm that may grab you more than others, so until you go... and besides plenty of other places to visit by bus etc so as you have no car , would be a good base camp.

The bin is right! Rick Steves hates everything we loved about Ireland! And we loved Killarney. Try to check out the bookshop on the main drag thru town. Very neat!

"Isn't Rick Steves (just) a little bit of a geek? "

LOL - I call him "Mr. Medieval", as that seems to be his description of anything built between 2000BC and 1960. :)

If he says not to go I'd take it as a recommendation to do the opposite.

It's not geeky, it's a great place to go and see!

If I went to California I would see San Fran and certainly would not believe anyone who said it was geeky.

This cult worship of Rick Steves is against my religion.

Killarney is beautiful.
