Anyone been to Kilgarvan ?? |
|
We are planning our first trip to Ireland in May. I had hoped to stay in the Killarney area but found a cottage in Kilgarvan that looks exactally like what we wanted. I am having trouble finding it on the map and hoping it is close enough to Killarney and the attractions in that area for day trips. We will have a car and want to see the country side but I am not sure exactly how far it is. Thank you for any info you can give me. |

According to the AA route planner, Kilgarven is 20 miles from Killarney.

This little map might give you an idea of where Kilgarvan is in relation to Killarney: Kilgarvan gets a mention here: http://www.countykerry.com/kerry_map.htm and, finally:

Quiet country village about 20mins south of Killarney has a motor museum. Bit remote, plenty of countreyside, and unless you have satalite TV you might only have 2 channels but with an open fire & bottle of wine?

Kilgarvan is about 40 mins drive to Killarney, on the main Killarney-Kenmare road (the maps indicate the other scenic, molls-gap route as the main one, but via Kilgarvan is the longer, but easier drive, used by locals). Its just a local village, with a few pubs, a take-away, postoffice, fuel station, small supermarket etc. Not a main tourist destination, but there is the motor museusm, and possibly the Mike Quill museum for the NY union organiser from Kilgarvan. The village nestles in farming valley. Kilgarvan is only 15 mins drive from Kenmare, which is a town very popular with visitors, and a good gateway to both the Ring of Beara and the Ring of Kerry. So, I'd say if you like the cottage, stay there. Its within driving reach of all the South Kerry tourist attactions, and even puts you within reach of South Cork also.

"Its just a local village, with a few pubs, a take-away, postoffice, fuel station, small supermarket etc. Not a main tourist destination" The above describes it well. It's a village that I would pass through on my way to Kenmare and the Beara Peninsula and stop for petrol or an ice cream! It's about 7 miles from Kenmare so, yes probably a good option for the ROK. It's fine for day trips but nothing special. Someone else on this forum found a cottage in Kilgarvan and used it as a base, I'll see if I can find out who that was. You could send them a Private Message and get details.

Thank you !! | ||||||

Kilgarvan would be fine as a touring base, as previous posters have said, for South Kerry and West Cork, however the problem for me would be the remoteness at night. While there are some local pubs in the village there are no restaurants to speak of. The nearest would be Kenmare which has wonderfull restaurants. May not be an issue if you have a nondrinking dirver.

This poster stayed in a cottage in Kilgarvan two years ago: vampyresheep If you send vampyresheep a private message on TA it will get to them. You could find out what their experience was like.
