I have seen lots of pictures of uncovered row boats on the lake and read that the ride takes one and a half hours.

I find it hard to sit still for five minutes let alone 1.5 hours.

Are there other types of boats that go around the lakes.

There are bigger boats on the lake, that leave from Ross Castle. They're a bit like the Maid of the Mist boats in Niagara.

I can't find any photos, unfortunately.

But you wouldn't be dancing around in them or anything like that!!

I have never been on the Maids of the mist boats in Niagara but I walked around the lakes in Glendalough last year with my husband and it was one of the most romantic days of my life. We are coming back to Ireland because last time was not long enough. Only three and a bit weeks til we are there again and I cannot wait.

If you liked Glendalough then IMHO you'll love Killarney.

My recommendation would be to move away from the crowds. There are some wonderful walks that are a teeny weeny bit off the main areas and are just magnificent.

1. Ross Island. The majority of tourists just see the Castle. The island itself is spectacular. Moody trees, beautiful lake. Very few people. Heaven.

2. In Muckross, walk down to the lake. In front of the house, there is a road just by the lake. Face the lake then walk to your right, walking down the path that leads by the side of the lake into a forested area. Just follow the paths inside the forest. Some lead to the lakeshore, others lead further on. Heavenly. Particularly good if its raining as the trees shelter from the rain.

There are other walks signposted in Muckross and worth doing.

3. Head to Kate Kearneys, get a jaunting car up to the Gap of Dunloe. Heaven.

4. If you're looking for real isolation and beauty, then get an Ordnance Survey Map and drive down the Black Valley to Cumeenduff Lake. My favourite. Absolutely isolated. Magnificent.

Have a great time.

Because of all the rain, Torc Waterfall should be in good flow!!

There are two types of boats for tourists on the Lakes of Killarney.

The uncovered boats are used to reach areas that require smaller boats. For example, they can take you from Ross Castle to Innisfallen Island (about 20 minutes) or from Muckross Boat House by Muckross House for short trips around Muckross Lake. They can also be hired for fishing trips. They use outboard motors and can hold up to 18 people. They are also used for the Gap of Dunloe trip between Ross Castle and Lord Brandon's Cottage. Standing up is not permitted on such boats and life jackets are required (provided).

The covered boats are too large to land anywhere other than their jetties and are too wide to make it out of the Lower Lake. They are used to give tours of the largest lake leaving from Ross Castle. A picture of which can be seen at http://www.derostours.com/local.html

Uncovered boats are also available from the pier at Hotel Europe for fishing or fun trips and you can use them for 15 minutes or a few hours.
