Hi, I have been living in Ireland for good few years now, but I could use some help of planning an itenarary when my sister is visiting me & my hubby next week. We only have a weekend to go away together and we have decided to head to Dingle on Friday afternoon and stay there two nights, which gives us one full day to explore the Dingle peninsula. I have things more or well sussed out in Dingle area, what I could use some help with though is what to do on Sunday before heading back to Cork? I have been thinking of driving to the Killarney area and spend the day in there. We don't need to be back until around 8pm on Sunday so we have a full day to explore the area. The questsion is what to see there? I have been thinking the following:
1) To explore Gap of Dunloe. To drive to Kate Kearney's Cottage, park there and walk to the top of the Gap and either walk or take a jaunting car back if we are too tired or there is not enough time to walk both ways. How long would it take to walk this? Me and my husband are both in relatively good shape, in our mid thirties, my sister is few years older but in much better shape, running 1-2 marathons each year! After walking the Gap then drive from Killarney to Kenmare and stop in few places on the way, maybe Muckross House, Ross Castle & Ladys View. Then drive to Cork via Kenmare
2) Skip the Gap of Dunloe and just drive to Killarney and spend the day exploring the Killarney area: the lake and the National park, Ross Castle, Torc Waterfall, Ladies View etc. Then drive to Kenmare stop there and drive home.
Do you think the first itinerary is too abitious? Also would it be better to drive to the Molls Gap, end of the Gap of Dunloe and and do walking from there?
Sorry this is so long, but any suggestions would be greatly appricated!

I guess it really depends on what time you leave Dingle? If you plan to have a late start with lunch in Dingle then I would say head to Muckross for you time in Killarney, then along the Kenmare Road (Torc Waterfall, Dinis Cottage, Ladies View, Moll's Gap) to Kenmare and from there back to Cork. But if you get an early start drive Dingle - Castlemaine - Miltown - Fossa - Gap of Dunloe, park and walk. I believe it is about 6 or 7 miles to the top of the gap and back to Kate Kearney's and I would suggest walking for that end. The other end is more of a continuous steep climb on an open road and though the views down the lakes and into the Blackvalley are impressive there is much more character within the Gap itself. The food at Kate Kearney's looked, smelled and sounded very good - we had packed a picnic but stopped off for drinks after our day of hiking. Depending then on how much time you have left after the Gap you can always include Ross Castle and Muckross House ...

Thank you for your r eply Tonyirish. This was exactly the sort of information we were looking for. The idea is to leave Dingle relatively early so it looks like we could do the Gap of the Dunloe. Would you, or someone else, able to say how long does it take to walk the top and back? Thanks again.

Of course it will depend on how fast you walk but I think you would be able to complete the trip within two hours - even with stopping to enjoy the views. Being that you will return the same way you can see how long it is taking you but it is worth going all the way to the top for the views into the Black Valley.
