Hi metric!

I just returned from Ireland two weeks ago and spent a couple of nights in Galway. I did a day trip to Clifden (and Kylemore Abbey). I loved both Galway AND Clifden but I did not see much in between. Certainly there are B&B's in between but the towns that I passed through were very small. Plus, it only takes about an hour to drive from Galway to Clifden via the inland road (I can't remember the name of it), so if you are trying to see both cities it is very doable in a day trip. I felt that Connemara was one of the most beautiful places in Ireland and was very sorry that I didn't plan to stay here longer. Next time I guess!

Sorry for not answering your question but I just thought I'd give you my opinion first :) Some of the towns in between were Oughterard on the inland side which is very near a large lake and looked to be lovely and Rossaveal on the sea side which is where the ferry to the Aran islands leaves from. Have fun planning your trip!

Depends on your timing . As previously stated the

direct route Galway to Clifden is not very long and

not very interesting. The coastal road is superb and

worthy of the additional time and distance.

The most recommended B & B is just outside Clifden ,

Mallmore House , Ballyconneely Road , Clifden , has

been recommended on this site on more than one

occasion . I have visited several times and have

always been impressed.

The beaches at Ballyconneely are seldom crowded and

quite special.

Others may suggest a stop off at Roundstone , I

would second that .

ElMertens, Silverstrand - Thanks for your replies!

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the Connemara area. We are planning to spend ~ 3 days there.

For some reason, I thought the drive from Galway to Clifden would take longer... We may just stay in Clifden and use that as our "base" for driving around the Connemara.
