dublin suburbs |
we will be staying in a suburb south of dublin, and then attending a wedding in wicklow. we will be driving from various points. i have printed out directions. how easy or difficult are the roads to navigate? are signs well placed? |
Road signage is notoriously bad in Ireland in general. But it should be ok on big motorways, you'll be on your own once you get to small roads! Printed directions will definitely help. TBH, Wicklow is not that far from south Dublin.
Which suburb are you staying in and what part of Wicklow are you heading to?
Use your printed directions but verify on a map. If you are doing a lot of driving in Wicklow then get an Ordance Survey map. Map 56 covers most of wicklow. Will cost you around €8. Can get in most bookstores. There is an old irish habit of changing road signs to confuse people. I don't know how prevalent it is anymore. I've never noticed incorrect signage in Wicklow but I always ensure I generally know where I am going before I set out..and I always have a map handy. Your car rental should come with some maps. If you don't get a detailed map of dublin then print some of from map websites...eg mapquest.com or googlemaps.

McD, incorrect signage in Wicklow isn't the problem... its the lack of any signs at all thats the problem! Penny, plan your route before you leave. Sometimes the wedding party will place temporary signs at junctions to direct the guests, but even so it will be difficult enough to find your way without attempting to map read at the same time. If you let us know where you are going to we might be able to help. Many roads in Wicklow (as with a lot of rural Ireland) are narrow and windy and at times you may wonder if you are going to end up in a field full of sheep!

I used to know South Dublin quite well. I lived there for a significant part of my childhood and we used to come up during the holidays to visit family and friends. Hub would have known it as well. And he would have driven it rather a lot. However, with the M50 and all the roadworks, and whatever, it is IMPOSSIBLE to get around. Signposts direct you in a certain direction and then wham!! No more. Just one sign in a general direction. At one stage when we were rushing for a ferry at the end of June, we saw signs advertising an antique fair the following weekend in Dun Laoghaire and followed them!! Luckily it got us to an area we know quite well so we were able to follow on from there. On the way home... it was a process of elimination. No, we're not going to Courtown, we're not going to Wexford, where else can we go? (Limerick apparently doesn't exist on parts of the M50 ,lol!!)_ So, what I'm saying is the signage in South Dublin is very vague at best.

Sometimes the sign is posted on the building near the corner. Best to get a good map and depend on the kindness of strangers.
Cormac, you will often get street signs on the building in the city centre, but not so much in the suburbs and definitely not around country roads in Wicklow (We tried pin them to cows but the damn things kept moving :-)

going from dublin airport to kilmacud, where we are staying. wedding in wicklow @ tinakilly and pre-wedding party in dun laoghaire.
penny07. I live close to Kilmacud. You are right beside the N11. This dual carriageway will take you all the way to the village of Rathnew where you simply take a left turn and the Tinakilly Hotel is only a few hundreds yards on your left. It is an easy drive. From Kilmacud to Dun Laoghaire you are better off heading down Mount Merrion Avenue (some road works there at the moment)crossing the N11 to Blackrock village and taking the coast road to Dun Laoghaire. I would advise you to return from Dun Laoghaire the exact same way, back up Mount Merrion Avenue until you hit the N11 and then it is a straight run. This is the route that visitors from the U.K. use after leaving the car ferry at Dun Laoghaire.

Box - would the easiest thing be for them to take the M50 right off the airport roundabout and then take that all the way around until it turns into the N11/M11 before taking the Kilmacud exit? I've missed that right turn in Blackrock a few times getting onto the N11 after coming off the EastLink. Penny - I spent my wedding night at Tinakilly House! It's in a lovely location - happy memories. You should try the Champagne breakfast; it's an Irish fry with a bottle of champagne. No better way to start the day right!
