Three nice dinners in Edinburgh ....... |
|
I'm looking for recommendations for nice eateries within walking distance of (or a short taxi ride from) the SAS Radisson on the Royal Mile. Any offers of help much appreciated. 1st night - informal dinner in a characterful pub that serves impressive food. 2nd night - special, but not too formal, fine dining restaurant that serves food with a scottish influence (cullen skink, haggis, cranachan perhaps) 3rd night - Something a bit different, Indian Maybe but definitely a bit special too. I'm getting flummoxed with all the choice on offer, so a little inside information would be brilliant. Thanks a million:-) |

Well, I might have a recommendation for your third choice, although it's at least a 20 minute walk from the Radisson. Yesterday evening, Mrs Claymore and I together with a few colleagues had dinner in a Thai restaurant called Dusit in Thistle Street. The food was absolutely fantastic and I'd have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending it. The staff are very good at explaining what everything is and getting customer's to try saying the Thai names for dishes, which is a bit of fun. There's a pub next door caled The World, which is closing today for a makeover. When it reopens, it should be very stylish, although probably modern rather than a traditional Edinburgh pub. Khop Khun Krab (thank you in Thai - unless you're a woman, in which case it's Khop Khun Kha). See - I learned something!

For your 2nd night what about The Grain Store on Victoria street, just a 5 minute walk from SAS. Scottish specialities- Jacksons http://www.jacksons-restaurant.co.uk/ (although I haven't been there for years, maybe check out The list or other reviews) http://www.stacpolly.com/ on St Mary Street just round the corner from the hotel- although may be formal ? http://www.dubhpraisrestaurant.com/index.php Again, just up the road and very scottish!

Dust is quite nice for your something different night, so I'd second that suggestion. The Mussel Inn on Rose Street is good if you like fish/seafood but doesn't really fall under any of your categories and is quite casual. Maison Bleue on Victoria St also good but more French with a Scottish Twist. Maxies Bistro (Castle/Johnston Terrace) is also nice but again not sure how 'Scottish'! Sorry, that probably wasn't much help!

Hi, Jackson's will give you the food you are after on the second night and is always good in my experience. It is worth looking at Le Sept, I ate there recently and loved it. Have a look at the menu using this link:

Excellent. These are just the sort of suggestions I'm looking for. I'm having trouble accessing the Jacksons website at the mo but the others are working fine, and certainly look good. Not afraid of a little formality on one night, just not what I'd call 'stiff' formality if you know what I mean, lol. NBC I know next to nothing about Thai food but it sounds like you've discovered a gem. Do you mean the World's End pub? Great suggestions! I'll happily take a few more if anyone else wants to pitch in. thanks:-)

Nope - the World in Thistle Street is a different pub. The World's End is in the Royal Mile. Thistle Street runs between George Street and Queen Street. Or you could head west for a block and a half and visit the Oxford, as we did on Friday. No sign of Inspector Rebus though!
