Borders is opposite Betty's - you can't get much closer.

As to the best assortment of books - probably Waterstones. Borders does DVDs and CDs as well, while Waterstones is pure books. That said, there's not much to choose between them.

It opens relatively late IIRC - I will check but I think it's about 8pm.

By the way, your friends will also find that although York doesn't have a lot of art galleries, at the moment, the city is one big art gallery. There are prints of famous and not-so-famous paintings from the National Gallery in London in frames all over the city. (http://www.thegrandtourinyork.org.uk/)

You might also be interested in visiting some of York's wonderful second-hand bookshops as well, such as the Barbican Bookshop (go past the Christian Books at the front - or not - and the second hand books are at the back and up the stairs) or the Minster Gates Bookshop just by the South entrance of the Minster.
