Scenic Route from York to Ingleby Greenhow? |
Looking to drive this route in a 12 seater bus with a cricket team. What route do you recomend for a taste of the north york moors etc? Or should I just use the A roads via thirsk? |
I'd just take the B1363 northwards out of York to Hemsley, then the B1257 to Ingleby Greenhow. It will be easier than taking a bus up Sutton Bank via the A19 / A170
Or even thrashing up the A19 / A172
Sounds Good ...thanks... We could check out Rievaux on the way...go into Great Ayton and check out capt cppks schoolhouse and maybe get a group pic at the cpatain cook monument. Can you drive up to the monument?
park near it and walk up - very nice walk though!
anyone heard of the dudley arms in ingleby
Yes, I was there a couple of weeks ago - what do you need to know?
Ok Dad our contact in Ingleby says... the dudley was around before european settlement in oz its a great spot for a couple of post game pints sometimes the overpaid boro footballers come out there for a drink eg viduka and schwartzer. what is your opinion for a bus on the b road across the moors?
well, it will be bumpy on the b roads but very scenic and interesting. The dudley Arms is a good pub with a very old english feel. When I had an uncle from OZ over to stay I did take him there and he loved it. Not so sure if any of the Boro players drink in there - Schwarzer is now at fulham and Viduka is at Newcastle. Some of the players do drink in Hutton Rugby and Yarm. I would suggest you go into Great Ayton too which is only a couple of miles away and go to Suggits for an ice cream and Petch's for a legendary pork and apple pie! There black oudding is great too! In fact I have just eaten a nice salad with a Petch's pork pie for my tea! From great Ayton you can walk to the farm where Capt Cook lived and worked asa boy and also pop in to Stokesley where the first ever woman who emigrated to OZ lived. I would definitely go up to the Lion on Blakey ridge if you have time.I hope this answers your question - if not let me know. To selcet a route depends on how much time you have. The drive from York to Thirsk is flat so I would stick to the A19 until Thirsk after that it depends how much time you have . If you want to get very scenic let me know and I will look for a route to Ingleby Greenhow.

Great stuff dad.... this is our situation...we are on a cricket tour of england july 2009...we will be in York for a couple of days...we will play Ingleby on a sunday ..and probably a team called yorkshire gentlemen at Escrick. we were going to be based at whitby but thought that was a bit out of the way...we are going manchester-york-notts-london over three weeks and hopefully see a bit of the ashes tests.Do you follow the cricket? anyway on the sunday we play ingleby we could leave York at 0900.we need to be at Ingleby to play at say 1.30 pm.I want to sample the north york moors, a bit of captain cook, have lunch etc and then play a game of cricket. We will have an almighty booze up at the Dudley after. we will be in a 12-15 seater bus.Your further opinions appreciated. BTW..will Boro still be in the premier in 09-10?
Yes we will be in the premiership! I think you will have time to take it easy across the moors and find your way to Ingleby for 1pm.Luckily Great Ayton is oly about 4 miles to Ingleby so you can call in there. The problem is its a Sunday so Petch's the butchers, who sell amazing pies, wil be closed. You can still the school house Cook went to and you might even be able to see the farm he grew up in before he ventured off to Whitby. If you ask in a pub near the Green they will tell yo ow to get to it by car and by foot. You will aslo have time to park near the Capt Cook Monument and have a walk up and see some good views of the moors. I personally wouldnt try to go somewhere for lunch - it will use up too much of your time. I dont know if you want to have a couple of beers before cricket, if you do then I would do that in Great Ayton. It is a shame its a Sunday as it would have been good to have a pint and a Petch's pork pie, Perhaps if am not on my hols I could pop in to Great Ayton on the Saturday and buy you a few and hand them over to you while you are there. Your bus will be fine across the moors. You could go many ways to get there of course . You could drive along the A19 come off at Osmotherley and head past Sheep Wash and Cod Beck and then through Chop Gate and come out near Stokesley/Great Ayton.
You need to decide: do you want to have a few beers before your game, or be healthy and take in some sights and enjoy your beers after the game. I can recommend many places to have a beer before the game. If you don't want to be in a pub before Ingleby you can take a more scenic route and explore a little. One of the earlier suggested routes on this post seems a good choice. To keep it simple i would: take a scenic route eventually finding my way to Great Ayton, on to the Monument and then to Ingleby. I am sure other people on this forum though will have much better ideas than me. Anything you want to know, just ask You will certainly have a good time and a good drink in the Dudley Arms with some very nice food.
