Eating at Borough Market |
We'll be visiting Borough Market in September and was wondering if anyone has any favorite places to eat for lunch? A particular vendor, restaurant or pub? |
There is just so much, it depends on your preference . There are veggie, fish, game and meat vendors all offering fantastic food to take away. Many people buy a selection and picnic in the grounds of Southwark Cathedral. There are pubs and restaurants as well, but not as interesting imo. The most important thing to remember is that the lunch time period is very busy, especially on a Friday, as lots of local workers queue for their lunch. try an early or late lunch to avoid this. Best advice is not to go with any fixed ideas, but browse and choose.

On a chilly day, I have to favour a hot sausage roll from the Ginger Pig, and a mulled cider. mmm... However, I agree that the best thing to do would be to go and browse, but go early so that your choice is not constrained to those vendors which don't have an insanely long queue.

kayb - going in with an open mind and anticipation of some lovely food you will do well not trying to order lunch at noon as mentioned. There are so many choices - I remember buying a roll/croissant and a hunk of cheese for an early snack when I arrived and later in the day, it was around 1300 hours we had some hot food - it's been a few years but there is such a good selection you'll be fine. Enjoy! Poppa

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. We'll be going on a Saturday afternoon - after we check into our apartment. I'd guess we'd probably be arriving about 1PM-ish.

Are there any stalls in Borough Market that sell fish and chips? I am going to be in that area at lunchtime and HAVE to keep to my traditional first-meal-in-London theme!! =)
I don't recall seeing any fish and chip vendors in the market itself, but you could have lunch at one of the nearby pubs - like the Market Porter.
Re fish & chips....There is a restaurant there called Fish, which now has a stall as well..so yes you can get some lovely fish and chips there, either as a takeaway or in restaurant
if you are in the Market Porter make sure you try a couple of the ales they have. They always some with weird and wonderful names.
Thanks, will definitely try fish! I am going to skip the ales, though, not a drinker myself. I know, a teetotaler in London, what could be worse? =)

We were at Borough Market about two weeks ago and I'd like to recommend the salted beef (corned beef) sandwiches. Of course can't remember the vendor's name, but they primarily sold bread, and offered the sandwiches "tomato, spinach or plain" which we thought were fillings but turned out to be the bread. We were there smack dab at lunch time on a Friday and though there were certainly long lines (sure signs of the best offerings) I didn't find the wait to be horrible. Crowded for sure, but the waiting wasn't so bad. We also had fantastic burgers but again I don't remember the vendor...you can smell them from far away. They do many different kinds of burgers and sausages. Have fun!
